True, but the 15 minutes or so I listened to included Fred ranting about his wife and kids - funny stuff. Wish Rich was there, he has the ability to goad Fred into extending the rant to ridiculous lengths. Gary, on the other hand is a complete buzzkill
Tanguay is just a fill in but once on the air he acts like it is his show. He kills any flow because he won't shut the fuck up and play second fiddle to Fred. Gary you suck just sit there and let Fred be entertaining because you aren't.

Shawn Thornton's story of how he and Tuukka came to buy a boat together was awesome.

edit: If you didn't hear it, it loses something in the retelling but here goes: he and Tuukka were partying with the team in the glorious June of 2011 when a trainer mentioned that he was selling his boat. Totally wasted, he and Tuukka both said, "We'll buy it" and wrote the guy a check the next day. Thornton told his wife (after rolling in at 5am or whenever) "I just bought a boat!" but she assumed it was the beer talking. A week later he asked her if she wanted to come see their new boat, when she finally realized he wasn't kidding.

Fred was on The Gary Tanguay Show with Gresh tonight on Comcast and Fred completely buried Tanguay.  The best part is I don't think Tanguay realizes it and think Fred likes him because he comes on his TV show.

And people wonder why T&R toast D&C.

That clip is a great example of why T&R can be fantastic. Toucher riffing, Rich doing skits.

Good stuff.

But they don't have characters! WTF is that all about?

I think that the whole character thing is a left-over from Ordway's old "Big O Show". He used to say over and over and over again, that the guys who were on the radio were characters. I remember thinking how dumb that was back then. It's still dumb now.

Actually, the whole "character" thing is right out of Minihane's mouth on yesterday's show.  He was sarcastically bemoaning that guys like Keith Law and Ken Rosenthal had tweeted that they would no longer be appearing on WEEI over this whole thing, and part of his response was that these guys didn't get the "character" he was playing on the radio.  Whether Minihane was being sarcastic and there were air quotes around "character" wasn't clear to me, but it is most definitely what T&R are riffing on with their skit.

If people put up an act on radio, whatever. I don't really believe it, but fine.

But don't use a "character" until it gets you in hot water, and then throw your hands up and claim innocence because "it's only the characters we're playing!"

First - Have some fucking conviction. If that's your character, then don't flake out when the heat is turned up.

Second - It's not a fucking character. If anything, it's an amped up version of yourself. It's shit you wouldn't say at a dinner party, but shit you'd say after 6 beers with your friends. Don't pretend that all of these thoughts coming out of your mouth are completely "the character" and that his feelings have taken hold of you like you're a fucking medium. Its you, you fucking asshole.

Its amazing that these guys say reprehensible shit, and then pretend it wasn't them/they don't feel that way/its not real because "my character said it, it's not how I feel!"

Fuck off.

I get that. My point (and I may not have expressed this very well) is that being in character is not a new phenomena at EEI. It's been going on since the days it came on the air. And since Callahan learned radio at Ordway's knee, it's not surprising that characters are part of the morning show. Assuming, of course, that Minihane wasn't being sarcastic.

No characters at 98.5? That's hilarious.

There are definitely times that Fred and Rich lapse into characters or at least caricatures of themselves.  But that's not the point.  Theirs are funny, WEEI's are hateful and angry and serve no purpose other than to rile up their hateful and angry audience.

The response to the latest WEEI mess was hilarious.  Whether or not they are hypocrites, T&R are awesome at lambasting D&C when they fuck up, but doing it in a way that keeps them somehow above the fray.  Like KFP said above, it is no wonder they are killing them in the ratings.

Edit:  and the best part is that D&C have no clue how to combat any of this other than to challenge them to lame sports debates and the like.  T&R are just completely out of their league, and it is awesome.

I think a case could be made that Felger and Mazz play characters on the radio more than Toucher and Rich do.  Felger always playing the "contrarian" and Mazz just agreeing with him on everything.  Actually Mazz just seems to play a copycat figure.  Maybe that was WaxPack's point.

Felger and mazz definitely do. However I do t ever see them throwing their hands up and retracting on a controversial point and say they didn't really mean it.

You know who does play a character and has basically said so? Tanguay.

That's a huge reason why he sucks too.

Anyone know what Fred was so pissed off about this weekend with regards to people taking shots at Rich? He mentioned it on air but I wasn't sure what he was referencing.

Just based on Fred's tweets and the fact that Rich wasn't in today, I would guess that his wife isn't doing great. Total speculation on my part, though.

He addressed it around 8:05 this morning. Rich's wife is not doing well, and for the last 3 weeks Rich has been sleeping at the hospital, coming in at 2:30-3:00am for show prep, and then doing the show from 6-10. Then he goes back to the hospital for the rest of the day/night and repeats the same schedule the next day. Sounds like a terrible situation for Rich and his family, but Rich is still trying to do his job everyday. Apparently some people on twitter were saying Rich's content hasn't been up to par recently and Fred went off and explained why. Really feel for Rich and his family. Cancer sucks.

I wish Rich would just take a leave of absence for a few months until this gets figured out and I would hope that CBS would pay him.

Whether Rich's work is great or not while dealing with this, it must be burning him out so badly. It's not some normal job where you can deal with it, bury yourself in work etc. Discussing sports in the way they do, putting together bits etc. must suck in his mindset. I couldn't imagine doing what he's doing at home, then coming on the radio 4 hours a day and expecting to have pre-recorded comedy and be funny on the air. At least most other jobs you can just  bury yourself in it and use it as an escape.

Yes it would be bad for ratings, but also if they can get a more stable crew in there for when Rich is out, it'd probably be best instead of "who can we find in the media today to host the show" and 3-4 hosts a week. If they could get Flynn / Roche or something in stable rotation it'd be better.

Bad news about Mary's condition.  Although I think I remember that she just went through a round of chemo treatment recently.  Often times when a cancer patient's condition gets rapidly worse after chemo treatment, it's a sign the treatment is working.  Let's hope that is the case with Mary.  Thoughts and prayers for Rich and his family.

I have no inside information whatsoever, but I think the only reason he is working is for his own sanity and I'm sure CBS has at least approached him to take a leave.  I know it doesnt seem like a 'bury yourself like a ostrich' job but if the alternative to working is stay at the hospital for another 6 hours a day or watch his kids all day and ponder what he might tell them happened to mom if the worst happened, then I can see how he would think work is really like a vacation.  Just anything that occupies your mind enough to forget about cancer would be great, like he'd probably love an IRS audit right now

Dan Roche isn't too bad as a replacement. He gets along with Fred and Wallach, he knows his stuff, he's enthusiastic; but he has a tick.

When he gets on a roll, he keeps saying "You know". It's all I notice now.

Roche would be so much better as the third mic/flash guy than Wallach. He brings a lot of the same qualities to the show that Wallach brings that Fred and Rich can go after for laughs, but he actually seems to have a clue about what he's talking about. It's amazing how often Wallach is exposed for knowing so little when he is supposedly the "stat geek" of the show.

Yeah, it's pretty painful at times, especially when Fred has to call him out.  I'm sure he thanks his lucky stars every night that he landed that gig when he did.

Yeah, I really don't mind Roche as the temp replacement guy for Rich and think he'd be a great third wheel. He's a good sport about getting ribbed by Fred and opens himself up for a lot of (lighthearted) abuse without getting all pissy, while also being relatively knowledgeable about any sports related topic. The thing that drives me nuts about Wallach sometimes is that he riffs on guests or Fred when they reference anything approaching advanced stats when he should be the fucking one referencing that shit and opening himself for Fred/Rich to jump in on. In no world should Fred know more about advanced stats than the guy playing the role of a stats nerd.

Re: Rich, I feel terrible for the guy and his family. Seems like such a genuinely good person and I can't imagine dealing with that shit. I also haven't noticed a drop in the quality of his work, but maybe that's just me. Some of his recent stuff in particular was damn good (e.g. the fake role playing bit spoofing on EEI and the Lester is never coming back song).

What drives me nuts about Wallach is when he tries to play the "cool kid" and make fun of the newer guys when Fred and/or RIch are gone.  He isn't good at it, at all.

I'm wondering if they just tolerate him or enjoy him being on the show because he is so freaking replaceable.

I get the sense they all genuinely like each other. I don't think it was that way at the start, and especially after the Crash Clark situation went down, but by and large the whole cast - including the fill-ins, regular guests and producers really have what seems to be an honest rapport.

Hey guys hey-

I want to say a sincere THANK YOU to all the T&R listeners who have reached out to me over the last several weeks.

I first wish to apologize to all of you for missing so much time on the air over the last month and a half. As many of you may know, my wife Mary found out that her cancer had returned for a third time this June. This news was quite frankly devastating for all of us. CBS was kind enough to give my family some time just to get away and be with each other for a while, because we knew that during the following several months my wife would be fighting for her life once again.

During Mary’s first relapse this past Winter, I took very little time off from work because everything, from her chemo to her transplant, went so smoothly. Unfortunately this time was not the case.

We knew going into this that Mary would be facing the strongest round of chemo she’s had to face yet. The doctors were taking absolutely no chances this time around. And almost immediately after the chemo had finished being pumped into her blood, the scares began.

Her blood pressure dropped so low that they were minutes away from putting her in the ICU. Miraculously, her BP slowly returned to normal. She had issues that prevented her from eating, and even though she is now able to get nutrition through an IV, she hasn’t eaten anything in 9 days. But our biggest scare was on Saturday when one of the doctors informed us that Mary had a blood clot in her neck, and there was essentially nothing we could do except hope that it didn’t slide into her lungs or brain. Time stopped. I couldn’t leave her from that moment on.

It ends up that we dodged a bullet, as several ultrasounds days later have confirmed that there was indeed no clot.

The good news is that now all of her numbers seem to slowly be going in the right direction (knock on wood), but we are far from out of the woods yet.

I can’t thank Fred and the rest of the guys on the show for letting me lean on them over the last several weeks, or the last two years for that matter. There were many nights where I came in straight from the hospital with almost zero sleep with very little prepared for that day’s show, but Fred would take up the slack. There were days where I would leave immediately after the show and come straight to the hospital, or the several times I’ve even left during the show to come to the hospital. It’s not a fair spot to put Fred, Jon, and the rest of the show in...but they never complained once and have been amazing to my family through all this.

But most of all, you guys have been amazing. Thanks to everyone who reached out, everyone who continued to support not only the show, but my wife and me. I’m not sure how much I will be on or off the air over the next few months, but just know that I truly miss working with my friends and talking to you guys. I’ll be back on the air soon, and the way things as of late seem to be going here in the hospital, it may be sooner rather than later.

Steak and eggs,
-Rich

Bad things happen to great people.  What a class act Rich seems to be.  I really hope his bosses continue to be understanding as I know a lot of other employers wouldn't be.

Rich seems like a genuinely good person.  I can't imagine dealing with a third round of cancer after seemingly being in remission twice, particularly since they have young kids.  Here's hoping Mary is through the worst of it and this time she has kicked cancer's ass.  Hang in there Rich.

Also, what a contrast between Rich's attitude and genuine appreciation for his job and his audience, and the attitude of the three miserable, angry pricks at WEEI.
