Was sitting in my car waiting for the train this morning listening to 98.5.  That Eddie Money bit came on and I considered not getting on the train. That was some great T&R.

I had to turn it off today.  They really need to stop Wallach from taking up so much air time.  Its not just how many times he talks, but he will talk about something for 1:00-1:30..thats an eternity on the radio. And he speaks in the most descriptive way possible (if that makes sense) for things that dont need to be descriptive because they are so obvious.

I thought they were pretty even keeled this morning.  I didn't pay rapt attention but from what I heard it seemed like a surprisingly "adult" take on yesterday's loss.

And yes.  Wallach needs to shut the everliving hell up.

Every point Wallach makes is structured like this:

Blah blah blah, and I know we touched on this yesterday, but blah blah blah.

His speech is full of unnecessary, throw-away filler.  He could make every point in half as many words.

I could write a few thousand words how much Wallach sucks but I don't want to muck up this thread because they're still great despite him. But since you brought it up, his verbal tics are worse than Tony Mazz.

-As others have said he takes 2 minutes to say something that could be said in 10 seconds.

- I hate misuse of the word "literally" and he is the worst offender. Once last season they were talking about some reliever blowing a game and he said the guy "literally crapped his pants."

-Obviously his laughing and stepping on jokes kills bits but worse is his other laugh that sounds fake. Someone will say something and he'll shout over everyone with a HA HA HAAAA.

The show would be so much better with someone like Roche in that spot.

It's the worst of all worlds, because Wallach adds so little that he's useless, but he's not really a fun/good-natured punching bag either like Adolfo. He just kind of weighs down the buoyant atmosphere that Fred and Rich work to create.  No offense meant - I'm sure he's a nice dude and he definitely has a place on a less entertainment-driven show.

There were stories for years that when he was an EEI flash boy, Wallach and Dale Arnold didn't get along and Dale more or less forbade Wallach piping in during the show.  It was fairly obvious that something was up because Meterparel and Sheppard were regular contributors to their respective shows in addition to being the flash guys but we never heard Wallach (beyond the flashes) unless one of the hosts (usually Dale) was out.

Now it is crystal clear why Dale did what he did.

Believe it or not, but this what he does on twitter too.  He feels compelled to use caps almost every other tweet to "REALLY" get across a point, if you know what I mean.

I know this is off topic, but I love the fact that Dale Arnold stands on a box during Bruins telecasts.

I can't wait for the Discovery Channel Anaconda show and the T&R Recap afterwards though. Both Fred and Rich are so fired up about this next Sunday.

Not an uncommon practice in television when two or more people of disparate heights have to share a screen.  Just makes things look better visually if all the talking heads are at roughly the same height.

Sorry if this has been answered already, but what's the reason they can no longer mention Chili Guy by name any more?

I think he's passed on... and further, that they probably don't want to get back into doing that type of show.

Did they ever mention Al Kaprielian after the 1st break? They were talking about how they had him on some years ago and Fred sang to him. Wallach had no knowledge of this and they were debating whether to play the bit and if they could even find Al's reaction which was supposedly great.

Rich said that Fred couldn't make it past 6:06 without having to go either throw up or take a shit, then he came back for the second break and had to leave cause he couldn't stay out of the bathroom.

No Fred this morning while I was listening. Of course I didn't listen for long once I heard Wallach's voice.

Twice this morning I've heard Wallach say a variation of "like I said earlier this morning." I listened for maybe 5 minutes. He's the worst.

He's ruining the show for me. I've listened to this show religiously since its first day on BCN. Now it's an automatic shut off any time Fred isn't there.

Wallach today "Nobody is talking about it but the Dodgers haven't used Beckett in their recruiting of John Lester. They're keeping him away from everything."

1) The Dodgers don't seem to be that interested in signing Lester. I know their name is there but they don't seem to have much of a chance.

2) As Fred and Rich both shouted as soon as he said it "HE RETIRED!" Why would he recruit free agents for the Dodgers? If they asked he should tell them to go screw. And why would they ask? He has no history with the club. He pitched there for 2.5 mediocre seasons.

3) Assuming for some reason that he would recruit for LA, why would they keep him away form Lester? Wouldn't they want Beckett recruiting Lester? Weren't they close when they were on the Sox?

This was just so spectacularly stupid I had to point it out. He's supposed to be the "sports" guy and "stats" guy on this show but I trust Fred with both of those far more than him. Which means he is completely useless except as a punching bag for Fred and Rich but that has lessened as the show has gone on.

He sounds like he went to the same WEEI University as Felger where he has to take the negative hotsportztakez on everything except he's not smart enough to make it entertaining or thought provoking like Felger can at least some of the time. He might have been successful in this town pre-'01 or even '04 when we were all dumber and had reasons to consistently bash ownership, but these days he just represents the worst of "the fellowship of the miserable."

Pretty much agree with all of that, but the Scalabrine interview made it all worthwhile - "enough with the bromance!" "Love ya' Scal!"

The worst part is he kept staring that Beckett was still part of the organization even thouhh he was retired which makes zero sense.

Lemme guess, Wallach was calling ownership cheap and whining about 4/70?

From what I heard, Fred was a total asshole here. He basically said that it was an insane deal and horrible because the Cubs won't, no way, no how, it iwll be impossible for them to win next year, so why do it?

Wallach sucked as usual, but tried to explain that they have some good, young bats, but no pitching, so this will help.  Fred basically said the Cubs shouldn't even try for the next couple years. really weird and there was no getting through to him

I think Fred worked himself up before the show even started.  He mentioned at one point that when he woke up and saw that Lester signed, he was dreading the garbage calls that were going to come in.  Wallach didn't help, but Fred was being a bit of an asshole to him.

Mazz will be the same way this afternoon. His whole shtick is "If he goes to the Cubs, I'll be pissed!" because he thinks the Cubs are garbage. It's like these guys have no clue who Baez, Soler, Rizzo and Alcantara are, not to mention Bryant, Russell and Olt. The Cubs are going to be really good, really soon.

They probably don't.  And if they do, it doesn't matter because it doesn't fit their narrative. It's Sports Radio 101.

Except Fred has never really been one to create false narratives or try to rile people up. I bet he's genuinely annoyed at dealing with Red Sox fans right now, and who can blame him? The reaction to Lester leaving has been pretty predictable from most people.

I agree with this, but it's part of the job and he whines about the shitty parts of his awesome job enough. He complains about not getting calls but it usually takes an event like this to get calls that early in the morning.

Does anyone else feel like they've been mailing the show in pretty badly the last few weeks?  I know it's the end of the year and the time between the Holidays is always kind of slow, but between replaying old bits from 2014 and now repeating more than just funny bits that worked the day before (they played their interview with Dan Roche, which didn't provide any incredible new insight into the Lester situation).  Fred has basically said that he's not trying particularly hard right now and I think the quality of the show has suffered as a result.

Well they always do the best of in December. I would agree though that it's going through a bit of lull but I think they've had weeks like this before and they always bounce back.

tl;dr version: Not worried

As said above, they always play the best of in December and they have always replayed the best bits from the previous day (usually 8:03 block) at 7:03. That's the norm.

Normally I'd agree with your reasoning and I'm sure some Sox fans were awful today. But his early rant at Wallach and callers was weird. It wasn't aimed at Sox fans but instead anyone who thought the Cubs would be competitive any time soon. He created a straw man that they won't win in 2015 so they will have already wasted a year of Lester and then he'll be on the decline so the entire thing was a waste. Then he just shouted down callers old Big Show style. I'm a huge fan and I had to shut it off

I know they always do the best of in December.  And they usually replay bits that prove to be really funny or get a great reaction from Fred/Rich.  Today they replayed the same interview with Roche that was live during the 6:00 hour.  Fred has also said on multiple occasions how he basically doesn't want to work this month.  As someone who has been listening to this show basically every day since they started on WBCN, this is the least effort I can remember Fred putting into the show and the most tired sports radio schtick (like shouting down his co-hosts a la Ordway) that I can remember him delving into.  Normally Fred's rants are entertaining but not so much lately.  I don't know maybe it's just me, but the show just hasn't been very compelling the last month to six weeks.

I think that's exactly it. He's never hidden his disdain for the Cubs and their fans but usually it is in the form of a hilarious rant. This was just irrational shouting and he wouldn't back down. It's not like anyone was crowning them champions.

I live down in Connecticut but I've taken to streaming T&R during my morning car commute, which lasts about an hour.  I'm sure you guys who have listened to them for years have legitimate complaints, but as a new listener I really enjoy the show.  Beats the hell out of Boomer & Carton on WFAN, which is the local show I get down my way.

This is exactly what it is. He's completely incapable of giving the Cubs any credit at all. He's got other blind spots that he's just irrational about as well, like the Big Ten.
