Well, I think the Yankees really didn't want to give up Florial.I hate, hate, hate this. I knew I would, but Fowler AND Mateo? Yikes!
They also got $1.5 bonus poll money in the deal for Gray. That’s something that can be done?! How much can a team bankroll towards the International pool this way? Sounds like something that should be looked at.
You have 5 years to think about it because this is one of those deals where Yanks fill an immediate need while A's wait on the future.Huh, I need to think about that. Happy that Florial is still here anyway...
Makes good sense to me. I do think Kaprielian will eventually break through and succeed.Kaprielian and Fowler are question marks to an extent because of their injuries, Kaprielian should come back but people have questioned his delivery and the repeatability of it. I loved Fowler as you all know but it's possible he will never be quite the same after that injury. And Mateo looked like a flop a month or so ago and has gone back to slumping the past week or so. All in all, I think a pretty great deal for Cashman.
Not sure if that's true (in general, I mean, for any team) but Severino has been pretty damn good so far this season. It certainly helps to have a dominant ace in the postseason but it's not a necessity, especially if you win the division and don't need to play the inane play-in game.Yanquis still need a number one to win big in post-season.
Makes Kap expendable. Not to mention that they loaded up on pitching in the draft.I love that Cashman managed to keep all of his healthy top pitching prospects: Adams, Acevedo, Sheffield (actually hurt now but not his arm).
On the flip side, there has arguably never been a bullpen this deep 1-6, but we're a long way from any of that still.Of course Severino has been great, but woudl he hold? I don´t say he surely won´t, but he is not a proven numero uno. Gray of course helps but I don´t see him stepping up like a numero uno. It´s interesting, we shall see.
What, no mention of the $22m per year CF they still have through 2020?Frazier, Hicks and Judge are the outfield for at least the next 3 years anyway. They still have Florial when (Hicks?) moves on
That´s scary for meOn the flip side, there has arguably never been a bullpen this deep 1-6, but we're a long way from any of that still.
He is a Yankee in name only at this point, he's already not playing and that is with Hicks out. What, no mention of the $22m per year CF they still have through 2020?
There are still 26 mins left to trade him. What, no mention of the $22m per year CF they still have through 2020?
Yeah I know. But I like to point out that mistake whenever possible, especially to my buddy who went on and on about how much smarter it was than resigning Cano.He is a Yankee in name only at this point, he's already not playing and that is with Hicks out.
I like what Cashman has done. A lot. But this is just nuts. Federico is off his rocker if he thinks they closed the gap.The rest of that Dan Federico tweet series I posted above:

"Kaprielian can be very very good. I see him as a 3-4 starter w/ 2 potential. But elbow issues put him behind Sheffield, Perez & others."
"#Yankees offered Chance Adams but Beane preferred Kaprielian."
A final quote #Yankees fans will like. "This move puts them ahead of Houston. I love what the Yankees did and who they were able to keep."
I pretty much agree, but I'm also not sure where the HOU pitching staff stands, and I know that McCullers seems to have hit a wall.I like what Cashman has done. A lot. But this is just nuts. Federico is off his rocker if he thinks they closed the gap.
Yeah, that was pretty clearly wrong from day 1, although I'm glad they don't have the rest of that Cano deal either.Yeah I know. But I like to point out that mistake whenever possible, especially to my buddy who went on and on about how much smarter it was than resigning Cano.
Fowler is in there even with his injury, Mateo and Kaprielian were both in there coming into the season and Mateo should have still been on this recent list with his crazy recent surge in AA. There is a ton of collective upside with these three, it's not an accident that no other team managed to bid this high for Gray.Unless I'm missing something, none of those guys are even ranked in BA's revised Top 100.
About where I'm at. Price seems fair. Or at least I don't think Cashman was bidding against himself. I just hope Gray can stay healthy.I've warmed up to the trade reading some of the justifications but I still haven't warmed up to Gray, who has a lot to prove outside of his home ballpark and in a division race.
I'd be more worried about what his home splits start looking like in Yankee Stadium as opposed to Oakland Coliseum than whether he can stay healthy or not.About where I'm at. Price seems fair. Or at least I don't think Cashman was bidding against himself. I just hope Gray can stay healthy.
Eh, at least he doesn't have to worry about giving up any homers to the team closest to the Yankees in the AL East standings.I'd be more worried about what his home splits start looking like in Yankee Stadium as opposed to Oakland Coliseum than whether he can stay healthy or not.
Fair, though I wouldn't be surprised if Aaron Judge figures out how to hit a few off of him despite the uniform change.Eh, at least he doesn't have to worry about giving up any homers to the team closest to the Yankees in the AL East standings.
His home/away splits are pretty much dead even. As for his performance in any particular ballpark except the Coliseum, it's all small sample size at this point with him. Sonny is listed as 5'10, 190. Couple of other small-ish guys: Pedro Martinez, is listed at 5'11, Whitey Ford as 5'10. Liltle guys for pitchers.I'd be more worried about what his home splits start looking like in Yankee Stadium as opposed to Oakland Coliseum than whether he can stay healthy or not.
Not this year they're not.His home/away splits are pretty much dead even.
