So there can be little doubt that the NFL, using ESPN, is conducting an orchestrated PR smear on one of it's teams. That's breathtaking.

Is there anything actually new in this? It seems to be a rehash of everything we already know.

The Martz blurb is new to me.

I've been cynical about the owners ability to rationally look at Goodell and separate his performance from the finances of the league, but this may just be a bridge to far.   This looks like the league is so hell bent on destroying the Patriots that they will burn down the whole league.  I've been amazed at their ability to look the other way when it's Goodell attacking some other team, but there is no way that the silent majority doesn't start to rise up and say enough.  You can't open the season by rehashing an 8 year old "scandal" after getting battered about another "scandal" for the last 7 months.  This is no way to run league and there has to be enough sense within the Management Council to realize the clown show in NY has run it's course.

The bigger Rams story is why Mike Martz would be dumb (and yes, "arrogant") enough to invent entirely new plays his offense had never run in the practice week before the god damn Super Bowl.  And then be "stunned" that they were not effective.

Oh for christ sake:

When Spygate broke, some of the Eagles now believed they had an answer for a question that had vexed them since they lost to the Patriots 24-21 in Super Bowl XXXIX: How did New England seem completely prepared for the rarely used dime defense the Eagles deployed in the second quarter, scoring touchdowns on three of four drives? The Eagles suspected that either practices were filmed or a playbook was stolen. "To this day, some believe that we were robbed by the Patriots not playing by the rules ... and knowing our game plan," a former Eagles football operations staffer says.

But yeah, releasing that deflategate info during Super Bowl week while the Pats were on the plane to Arizona was probably a coincidence and not the league throwing shit at the Pats before the Super Bowl.

After reading the article on ESPN, after finishing up laughing, it occurred to me that not once in the entire article do they mention that filming the opposing team's sideline was legal as long as it was done from the correct location. Not once. Such a joke.

Interesting that they couldn't get anyone to go on the record for anything significant. Even Walsh.

There are no depths these jackals won't stoop to. I caught some flak in the deflategate thread the other night for suggesting we should lock it, we had won, it was over until the appeal next spring, and it was becoming a redundant exercise in hurt feelings. I was so fucking wrong. These motheruckers will not stop in their smear campaign. Win as many more as you can, TB and BB. When their run is over, this fucking league can burn to the ground for all I care.

Am I crazy, or do I remember something from the Spygate era saying that one reason the NFL found the walkthrough taping story non-credible was because the technology of the Pats' cameras wasn't conducive to it?  The story doesn't mention this at all.

I am stunned. ESPN's response to overblowing the Deflategate story for 7+ months is to rehash fucking SPYGATE from 8 years ago? The Pats need to go scorched earth on all of this bullshit. Tear it all down. Belichick should have a press conference spilling all of his dirt on every team in the history of the NFL. I'm sick of this constant nonsense.

My honest take on this is that anything is possible---and the way we separate 'possible' from 'actually happened' is by looking at evidence. So any of these claims are as valid as the evidence put forward.   If there isn't any, then so what?  If there is....people can cite it.

The narrative won't change for many, but all we can do is keep pushing people to think critically about what is demonstrated by evidence and what represents unsupported assumptions.

I suspect this will continue to be wholly of the latter type

The real story here is that the Patriots actually must have been TERRIBLE at cheating because they knew all the plays and STILL only won those Super Bowls by 3 points each. Why hasn't the media picked up on this?

This owner has to be Mark Davis right?

"The world has never seen anyone as good as Roger Goodell as a political maneuverer. If he were in Congress, he'd be majority [leader]," one owner says.

That's a great point, actually.  You know you have no chance against an allegation when the the fact that you won by close margins is used against you in a story about how you systematically cheated.

A photograph snapped at the party went viral: There was a smiling Tom Brady, in a designer suit, showing off all four of his rings, a pair on each hand. On the middle finger of his right hand, Brady flashed the new ring, the gaudiest of the four, glittering with 205 diamonds -- and no asterisks.
Seriously, ESPN? This last part sounds like PFTCommenter wrote it using spellcheck.

Hmmm. Wonder how they missed this little nugget: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl--nfl-constant--patriots-have-racked-up-wins-before-and-since-spygate-011333070.html

This year [before 2013 season] marks the sixth season since the scandal broke following the 2007 season opener, putting the incident in the midpoint of New England's long run of high-end play. Since the start of the '07 season, New England has gone 76-20 in the regular season. In the six seasons before the scandal, the Patriots are 70-26.

Then Patriots go 12-4 in 2013, followed by ho-hum another 12-4 last year. So that's a cool 100-34. Which means:
  • Six seasons before Spygate: .729 winning %
  • Eight seasons after Spygate: .746 winning %
Exponent that, motherfuckers.

If you put any professional sports team under this level of scrutiny and take everything their rivals say as fact, which franchise doesn't come off looking shady? It's hilarious that ESPN just chose to rehash this 8 year old story in the wake of Brady wiping the floor with Goodell in court.

I'm still eagerly awaiting the explanation of how the Patriots win percentage increased and they went from good offensive team to historic powerhouse after they stopped taping the signals that were crucial to their success.

You know what the mouthbreathers are going to say, right?  "That's when they started deflating the balls!".  This is literally what ESPNFL wants people to think.

I'm not angry, just floored that this is real life.

The NFL really is a bunch if sore losers. Too arrogant to think that maybe, just maybe they were out coached and out played.

It's called coaching and practice especially with two weeks.

We saw it with the practice footage that had Butler and company prepared.

No mention in that whole article that taping signals was legal in every part of the stadium except on the sidelines.

Which makes the whole thing so dumb. It's perplexing that Belichick just didn't film from anywhere else.

It's almost as if having a whole staff of coaches and scouts breaking down film of a team's previous games can give them an incredible insight into play calling tendencies in certain situations. Having arguably the greatest quarterback of all time reading a defense in real time could help too, but I don't know.

As usual, Curran is not taking any BS:

@tomecurran The story promised in the lede that it would explainihow 07 affected '15. Instead, 70 percent is rehash of 8-year-old story.

This shit really shouldn't get me mad, but it still does. It's really incredible that Patriots have continued to block out all the negative crap and keeps on winning. A lesser team would have gone to the toilets.

Coughlin deliberately left too many guys on the field to game the clock.  They changed the rule after the season, IIRC.

Of course, he looks like someone's grandfather in the nursing home, so that's all cool.

What if I told you that some sore losers start with a conclusion and retroactively change a narrative to fit their worldview?

Between here and everywhere.
The Patriots of MLB - the Cardinals - ADMITTED to hacking another teams computers to get insider information.

But these are the stories that resonate as CHEATING.

My theory all along continues to be not that Goodell was trying to protect the Patriots during Spygate – but that as a veteran of the League office understood that it could cause football's sordid culture of gamesmanship to bubble to the surface and taint the game.

The Martz stuff, which people are focusing on in this OTL report, goes exactly to this point. Look past the piece that Martz thinks something happened (newsflash: coaches and players who were bested by BB tend to be jealous and suspicious). Focus instead on the fact that Goodell sounds like he was begging him not to stoke the flames of Spygate by going into the walkthrough issue and opening a massive fan of worms.

Effectively, the message out of Spygate was that one team was violating the rules. The problem is that the owners all interpreted Goodell's perceived short circuiting of the investigation as the League letting the Patriots off easy. Hence, the massive overcorrection you see in DFG.

If this 14 year run occurred in basically any previous 14-year span in NFL history, Belichick and this franchise would be revered as gods. Only the ghost of Ed Sabol himself would be worthy to talk about them.

I love the bit about the Eagles being perplexed at Brady carving their newly unveiled dime scheme they had never used before. Wow, so inventive! I'm sure Brady had never even seen a dime formation before, how could he possibly know where to go with the ball if he weren't cheating?

This is truly amazing... ESPNFL is not even trying to be clandestine about this anymore. Blatant trolling.
