This is almost as close as we can get, I suppose, But I'd really love to have seen absolute prime Federer against absolute prime Djokovic on the various surfaces.
That stinks, do we know if she was vaccinated?https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/id/31839616/coco-gauff-tests-positive-covid-19-play-tokyo-olympics
Coco Gauff tested positive for COVID and will miss the Olympics
I did some digging. As of June 7th she was not vaccinated - https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/07/sports/tennis/french-open-coco-gauff.htmlThat stinks, do we know if she was vaccinated?
Though Coco has not yet been vaccinated, Corey Gauff said he and his wife Candi have been, which alleviates some concern and testing regimens.
As a huge Fed fan I am coming to terms with the fact we may never see him on the court again. I wish he could have had a farewell tour (or at least a farewell tourney). He spoiled tennis fans for much longer than we deserved.Federer just announced on Instagram he has having another surgery on his knee.
His final win at the French Open was on Peacock. That was some bullshit. As a huge Fed fan I am coming to terms with the fact we may never see him on the court again. I wish he could have had a farewell tour (or at least a farewell tourney). He spoiled tennis fans for much longer than we deserved.
A lot of anti-vax sentiment on the tennis tours, apprarently:Last week the world No 3 men’s tennis player, Stefanos Tsitsipas, was asked during the Western & Southern Open about his stance on vaccines. “For me the vaccine has not been tested enough, it is new, it has some side-effects,” he replied. “I just see no reason for someone in my age group to need to be vaccinated. I think the concept was [for the vaccine] to be given to older people. For us young people, I think it is good to pass the virus, because we will build immunity.”
I'll give you three of those, but Richard Gasquet? Not sure what decade you think this is.Some crazy first round matches scheduled on Monday:
Madison Keys/Sloane Stephens (both unseeded, this was the 2017 final)
Andy Murray/Stefanos Tsitsipas (3)
Richard Gasquet/Daniil Medvedev (2)
Roberto Bautista Agut (18)/Nick Krygios
He also got injured in his last match at Winston Salem. As much as I love watching his one hander my suspicion is it will be a pretty routine 3 setterI'll give you three of those, but Richard Gasquet? Not sure what decade you think this is.

I love the idea that Murray is thinking to himself that if he wins this match, he becomes the de facto #3 seed himself.I can't imagine him actually winning (unfortunately, IMO), but Murray just took first set over Tsitsipas 6-2
If he can pull this off the draw is somewhat favorable to at least a run to the second week? Herbert or Mannarino (Herbert took first set) next, and then 3rd round vs 26th seeded Norrie or 18 year old Alcaraz. I'd get a kick out of "old man Murray" vs Alcaraz actually.I love the idea that Murray is thinking to himself that if he wins this match, he becomes the de facto #3 seed himself.
I would've made my players run many hill sprints for that kind of statement! #onepointatatime15-40, five points away from a two set lead.
Heh, I'm not playing.I would've made my players run many hill sprints for that kind of statement! #onepointatatime
Any insight into why Murray and Tsitsipas didn’t shake hands?Crazy first day, Coco barely pulls out her match 6-4 in the 3rd, she has an intense draw coming up (Sloane Stephens, then Kerber, then Osaka, and that would just put her into the quarters), and Tsitsipas holds off Murray in 5, just under five hours (!!).
Tsitsipas took a long break between the 4th and 5th set.Any insight into why Murray and Tsitsipas didn’t shake hands?
Ah ok...all the above makes perfect sense.Tsitsipas took a long break between the 4th and 5th set.
The other reason would probably be better discussed in V&N.
Yup. Caught a bit of Blake/Fowler discussing it earlier today and Blake summarized it pretty well I thought - it's not technically cheating but it's gross. He called out fellow American's Isner & Opelka for doing the same thing...and praised Tiafoe who took under 2 minutes in between sets to use the bathroom and change. That was a truly incredible first day of a Grand Slam, quite possibly the best first day ever.
Murray is still pissed:

which is great. Not counting on any of them to make an actual run though. It's just absolutely nuts that it's been 18 years since an American man has won a slam (Roddick, 2003 US open); and 12 since even having a finalist (also Roddick, 2009 Wimbledon). I don't have time (or the stomach) to do a deeper dive, but my guess is I could count semifinal appearances over the past decade on one hand (the only 2 that spring to mind are Querrey & Isners' runs in 17/18).They said the most American men into the second round since 1994.
I think Murray might take issue with your post, but otherwise very valid pointOf course, pretty much every country except Switzerland, Spain, Serbia and England has had a similar dry spell for their men.
Good find on that article. Obviously while all the hypotheses discussed play a role, I really do wish there was more time spent discussing the Martin Blackman quote that finishes with "And we really didn't react to it as a federation.” In my opinion, that is the largest piece of the pie. Earlier there are a few sentences spent on the USTA's role, but it somewhat glosses over it.Coincidentally a long article today on that exact topic, pretty good:

No it was the wind gusts that were blowing the rain through the gap between the concourse and the retractable roof. What the hell happened to Armstrong Stadium. They have a roof failure?
