There’s nothing more American than a player going in that run and the striker floats in space and tries to get on the back shoulder for a through ball while providing 0 passing options.

I know the game situation had the US thinking draw at that point but it should be impossible to skin 6 defenders and never have a viable passing option lol
He should have just laid to off to the man going down the wing about 8 seconds into that clip.

The team was gassed but the tactics were really raggedy at this point. The team needs to push out and keep possession a bit and Gio needs to try to keep the ball by passing into the available acre of space.

As a Greggggg critic, I think he got this one mostly right. I wasn’t too excited about the last few subs and the end-of-game bunkering, but you can’t argue with the way he set the team up. At some point the players need to do their jobs. Two glorious missed chances. Mexico couldn’t create unless the US gifted them something. Mexico had a chance to win it, and if they did that loss would’ve been on the players not on Gregg imo. Happy with the point regardless.

I do think the Sons of Hugo Perez will do us a solid this weekend. This has always been a 2026 project for El Salvador and I’ve been very impressed with how they’ve played. I don’t expect them to give an inch even though they’ve been eliminated.

Question: with the USA an automatic qualifier for the next cycle as a host, do they still go through the qualifying cycle as they are now even though it is meaningless or are they exempt

There’s no cycle, so it becomes a desperate effort to find quality opponents to sharpen the squad while the rest of the world is qualifying. I suppose 2026 will be unique in that the 3 host nations can play friendlies each other.

One thing Qatar did this cycle was work out a deal with UEFA where they were a "shadow" member of Group A, which only had five teams. Qatar played a friendly against whichever of the five teams had a bye week on a given matchday. Hopefully the USSF finds a way to do stuff like this because the rise of Nations League means the cupboard is very bare for friendlies, especially with CONMEBOL teams possibly joining UEFA nations league.

I do hope that USSF is able to find a creative way to keep the team sharp. Canada and Mexico will be in the same boat so perhaps all three federations can work together to figure something out. One advantage for the USMNT is that most of the players in 2026 will have been through the qualifying grind in 2022, which is actually pretty rare and the benefit of being such a young team, so they should have a degree of cohesion. Whatever the case, host nations tend to perform well at World Cups, so the benefits of playing at home outweigh the loss competitive qualifiers.

So USA,Mexico, and Canada don’t play in the last qualifying cycle next time around. I know there may be more teams getting in next time but if there weren’t what would happen to the rest of Concacaf. Would Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, and Panama being playing for one bid?

The 2026 tournament is expanding to 48 countries. CONCACAF will be awarded 6 slots. So the rest of the conference will be competing for 3 bids.

So basically it’s win and in yeah?
Or draw and CR draw?
Win and don’t lose by a ton in CR (depending on goal difference after this round). Or win and CR doesn’t hold on. They lead 2-1 right now.

California. Duh.
Referee had said there would be 5 minutes of stoppage time, and then somehow changes it to 4, immediately after wasting 2 or 3 minutes on a VAR review that nobody even understood what he was reviewing.

So, goal difference is now +6 against Costa Rica.

That means it would be at least +7 if the U.S can beat Panama and possibly more.

Anyway, win and stay within 4 goals at Costa Rica goes through.

Don't know if he's going to give that, but it's right on the edge. Hands to the face and neck.

EDIT: and a hand ball as well.
