It's definitely more than that. Mac started to go downhill with the same OL second half of that season and he's looked largely bad even in situations where he's had plenty of time to throw.
My memory is that the play calling was very much designed to protect Mac from making mistakes or having to do much of anything. Lots of screens and short crossing routes, etc.
There are like 1-2 people here that still claim it can and would with Zappe. Apparently it can get worse than zero points and pick-6’s.
I don't think it was Patricia. Mac is deathly afraid of getting hit because getting hit hurts. When he thinks he's about to get hit by a real or imagined threat he panics. His brain is broken.
I mean if Zappe just goes three and out every drive in the second half, that’s better than Macs first half
He was 27th in the league in EPA/Play with win probability between 20-80% as a rookie, he did a whole lot of damage against the Jets, Jaguars and a Titans team devastated by injuries. He's even worse now, but he was a "play from ahead, strong running game, lean on play action" guy back then too. And then they tried to make him into Joe Burrow sitting in shotgun all game and it got worse.
Did he suffer from that in year 1?
Yep. You could throw it directly into the ground on every play the entire second half and have a better half. Hey, anyone here can do that.
