They can try that, though more often I see a combination of these 3:
1. Cut lateral patellar retinaculum (lateral ligaments) to avoid this "pull" on the patella to the outside of the knee
2. Repair medial ligaments (MPFL) to stabilize inside of knee and prevent patella from dislocating to outside of the knee again
3. Re-align the tracking of the patella, as often the patellar tendon in these patients inserts too far on the outside of the shin bone and pulls kneecap outward. If you move the tendon insertion closer to the direct front of the shin bone, it's much harder to dislocate the patella laterally.
For what its worth, Maholmes always seem to run a bit knock-kneed to me, I bet he has some abnormal patellofemoral alignment in the background predisposing him to this they will address in the offseason (if it can wait).
