Yeah guys c’mon, fuck the Lakers. LeBron the human is pretty admirable but the last thing I want to see is him wearing the purple and gold and hoisting the trophy.

Bill Russell spent a good deal of his career beating the shit out of the Lakers.

I've no idea who he would root for, but he can root for whomever he likes.

But I would bet about 99% of Celtic fans would find rooting for the Lakers about impossible. Particulalry if you factor in some historical context.
I agree... But times are different now. LeBron is getting closer to Russell's advocacy. It's beautiful to watch.

I think you take sports way too seriously, in terms of uniforms. Were you even alive to care about the 80's rivalry?

This is where I am. LeBron is probably one of my favorite athletes that I have never actively rooted for. His actions off the court are pretty admirable and he strikes me as a genuinely good guy. Start producing “The Last Dance” (or whatever you choose to call it) for LeBron because I’m there opening night.

Root for the Lakers because LeBron happens to wear the purple and gold? Never.

I don't have an accurate measure of all the player's advocacy in this matter. But I will assume most if not all of the players are outraged by our turbulent and troubling times. LBJ is to be commended for his leadership position and eloquence in speaking out against racism and injustice. I hope he can make a difference in making our country a better place.

But he's still a fucking Laker.

And I may root for the Lakers when they battle the Darth Vader All-Stars for intergalactic supremacy or when Hell freezes over, whichever comes first.

I think if LeBron played for my favorite team the whining after every call would get to me. It would especially bug me on those plays where he doesn’t get back on D.
I'm assuming you are a Celtic fan? You wouldn't take him? For fucks sake, that is a hot take
A fan of a team with a GM who was the most famous whiner of his era. I also love the endless endless endless whining about...whining. As opposed to say greatness in action combined with great team player and, yes, real eloquence tonight about Breonna Taylor.

haha Ainge wasn’t half the whiner McHale was.

Look it was an innocuous comment made after LeBron was complaining to the refs as he was going to the line to shoot free throws. Somehow it morphed into an argument that I don’t want him on my team and maybe I am the biggest hater of all time. BTW check my comments about him in the Laker thread over the weekend.

I mean if I can’t whine in here about the Lakers I guess I’ll have to face the really scary realities of 2020 and I’m not entirely prepared to do that.

Ageism aside, I have plenty of reasons to dislike the Lakers.

For starters, in my experience, Laker fans from outside the LA area are the worst fans in sports. Obnoxious, bandwagon hoping, Kobe-spouting front runners and I went to college with a bunch of them, most of whom were from New York City. I think prior generations felt this with Cowboy fans, and of course other sports have things like Notre Dame fans, Duke fans, and of course Yankee fans. Since basketball is much more popular with people of my generation than baseball, I have dealt with a lot more Laker fans than Yankee fans, and I've found it difficult to have serious conversations about basketball with many of them.

Secondly, this incarnation of the Lakers sucks. The Lakers were a tire fire of an organization for years and years, and it was wonderful to see them in a perpetual tailspin. Then all of a sudden because LeBron wanted to live in Los Angeles, the Lakers suddenly sprung back to relevancy and all of their previous mistakes, mistakes that would kill a franchise like the Timberwolves, Pistons or even the Celtics, were magically erased merely because LeBron wanted to live in LA. Then, because LeBron is also a major power broker in the NBA and a defacto agent, he was able to recruit Anthony Davis to LA. Compare them to Miami, Boston or Denver, all teams that have been smartly built from the ground up, nailing draft picks and winning trades; the Lakers are here because NBA players enjoy playing and living in Los Angeles.

This has been the M.O. for most of their existence. The Lakers won their first ring in LA because Wilt forced his way out of Philly because he wanted to live in LA. Fast forward a few years, West, Wilt and Baylor are retired and the team is in last place, but all of a sudden Kareem wants out of Milwaukee and wants to live in LA, so the Lakers are revitalized. 20 years later, the Lakers are again headed nowhere, when Shaq wants to come live in LA too, and the Lakers are revitalized AGAIN. 20 years after that, it is the same story. It's great that players like to live in LA; but the franchise has subsisted off of their location as much as front office savvy.

Lastly, in my teenage years the Celtics met the Lakers twice in the finals. I know you Gen X kids saw them meet THREE times; so you are all clearly far superior to me in understanding the rivalry.

BEAT LA

If we replace “Lakers” with “MFY” is it any simpler for people? Geez.

Now imagine the Yankees have one fewer WS all-time than the Sox and are five wins from the title.

My triad of evil. I will always root against them with all the energy I can muster.
Could care less about the Habs, but can't cheer for LAL or NYY under any circumstances.

No beef with LBJ on or off the court.

I skipped the 2000 World Series over NYM/NYY hate. 2004 cured the former, but the latter is forever.

Will never understand the Lakers starfucking, honestly.

This man gets it. At one time, there would have been a Colts or a Niners or the Ravens or Steelers, or someone, but the Pats dynasty has made them all irrelevant in the hate department. Now, it's just pity.

I like Lebron off the court, but I'm not a fan of him on the court, and my hatred for the Lakers runs deep, so nope, if they play Miami, I'll gladly watch and hope to see some great basketball from both teams, but I will never, not at any point in my life, root for the Lakers. If one of my kids even tried putting something purple and gold in their rooms, they'd be evicted. The only picture involving the Yankees hangs above my son's bed, and it's a large, framed picture of Tek smashing ARoD in the face. I may add to that with a picture of Pedro throwing Zimmer to the ground.

I am proud of this board for gradually being less sexist and more aware of the diversity of fans out there. In the two decades I have been on SoSH we've made progress in so many ways, with more to go.

But if we can't hate the Lakers, then what the fuck? Why bother with any of this?

As Cedric Maxwell put it, "If I had a glass of water and any of those guys had been on fire, I would have drinked the water."

So there are a few outliers, but I am relieved to see that the overwhelming majority of this forum has not lost their sense of propriety and grace.

BTW: lest we forget, Magic Johnson is an eminently likelable fellow off the basketball cour.

IOW: the eternal truths still hold, and bare repeating. F the Lakers.

Seriously. Fuck LeBron, fuck AD, and fuck that entire roster of JAGs and ring chasers. They may be wonderful people off the court, that's cool, but on the court they make my blood boil. LeBron is Kyle Lowry cranked up to 11.

If things don't work out I hope Tyler Herro hangs 50 on LeBron's head.

Dude you don't understand. You aren't old enough to really understand the rivalry!

First of all the two biggest whiner players of my lifetime were Kareem and Phil Jackson.

Second of all if it was the Animal Rescue Shelter Team that had 16 titles trying for 17 I’d be rooting
against them, but it’s the Lakers, who have bitched and moaned for 1000 years and have had more titles gifted to them than anyone in the history of anything*. Fuck them.

* I mean, except for the Canadiens of course.

In 1962, I was about 10 when Frank Selvy and the Lakers scared the crap out of me. I have feared and loathed the Purple and Gold ever since.

The game thread for that G7 OT thriller must have been insanity to the 10th power. .

I'm not an x's and o's guy, but this is an interesting look at zone usage around the playoffs.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29963960/nba-playoffs-why-teams-combating-offensive-revolution-going-zone-defense
And to stay on topic, FTL.
Yeah, good article. I think the below is the biggest point for Cs (maybe it should be in a different thread).
Still, as Brooks notes, zones have value by taking offenses out of what they typically want to do.
"When you [face] a man-to-man defense, you can run a pattern," Brooks said. "You know that if they guard it this way, OK this will be open, and, if they guard it this way, [then] this will be open. So you have your check points as a player and as a coach.
"But in a zone, it's a little bit of organized chaos. You have gray areas. ... You have some concepts, but you really have to be free-flowing. You really have to have a really stronger-IQ basketball team to be able to attack it consistently."

BOS has super-skilled players but IMO the youth of JT, JB, and Marcus has shown through when trying to attack the zone. Time to grow up.

I was first thinking of lebron plowing through everyone and getting calls as a birthright. But since that is unsurprising.. yeah, that ad crap
The Lakers recent crying about not getting calls is one of the more embarrassing things to ever happen in professional sports.

MFY and MFLakers are co-leaders in my sports-hate clubhouse

usually with little season overlap I can give each fucking devil-spawned franchise the contempt they rightfully deserve.

2020 presents somewhat of a challenge in that due to covid both threaten to share a national stage and get ball-washed nightly simultaneously in prime-time

It will not be pretty.

Clealry the west-coast son of Satan presents a more immediate threat, while I hope its east-coast brother, the pre-season favorite to win the AL pennant, finds a way to Munson itself, and self-destruct.

My 2nd level of sports-hate is: 76ers, Habs and Knicks and Jets
