It is worth noting, not harping on the fact, that Yankees fans HATE Stroman. Radio callers have been killing this potential move. I couldn't care less about his twitter antics. Be a good clubhouse guy and I'm all good.

Definitely some non-fans of Stroman in NY:

“Brian Cashman would be just absolutely stupid to bring that guy here,” Gannati said on “Boomer and Gio” on Thursday, via Audacy. “He was a mess in New York. He was an absolute jerk. He was a terrible person in the clubhouse. He was part of that faction with Javy Baez doing the thumbs down. He fought with everybody. The guy is the pits. He sucks. He is sludge. He’s a slug.”

Stroman is a good picture that has been durable throughout his career. Very surprised a pitcher with his resume was available at that price, and a good piece of business by the Yankees, sadly.

We’ll learn more but it seems like NY offered Snell 5/150, and he/Boras held out for more so NY pivoted to Stroman.

Stroman should delete his social media immediately. Yankee fans mostly hate him but also most Yankee fans are complete morons (probably true for most fanbases but this is the one I follow most).

Stroman brought it on himself but the root of it was that he really wanted to play for NYY and we didn't want him, which made him go on a rampage. He's a Long Island kid, so if Yankee fans are complete morons, he's one of em!

Regarding Snell, I didn't think these were connected signings. I don't see why we wouldn't still take that Snell contract.

That was one thing, but there have been lots of others. He just shouldn't be on social media until his career is over, but agreed that I like that kind of attitude. He is a great fielder also.

NY needs to clear two 40 man spots now. They still have five catchers but they really don't need Bubba Thompson or Jeter Downs, so those are the two I'm guessing.

NY is over $300M now and has a full rotation and Snell already turned down their 5/150. I guess NY could still try to trade for a younger guy with options but they don't really have much excess prospect capital left to move, hence the Stroman move.

"Out of all pitchers who threw at least 100 innings last season, Stroman’s 57.1 percent ground-ball rate ranked third.

Because he’s a heavy groundball pitcher, Stroman usually keeps the ball in the park. His 0.59 HR/9 this past season ranked second in MLB behind Sonny Gray."

I have a feeling that Stroman will work out just fine in pinstripes . Like the opposite of a Sonny Gray type signing*. The way he pitches works in this stadium with this defense. He can handle the spotlight, which is good, and I think a clubhouse with good leadership will keep him from getting too carried away, which is also good.

It's also a short contract at a reasonable price.

He fits. I like it.

*edit: Aside from the ground ball rate. I was typing as JA posted. Forgot that Sonny was good at that.

Oh, Rortvedt may be out of options in which case he probably needs to go.

I also like that Cashman put a reasonable offer out to Snell and pivoted to plan B right away when it wasn't taken instead of playing the Boras game and maybe winding up with neither.

Cashman did a fantastic job this winter, they didn’t spend big or give up any essential prospects, but they filled every spot needed pretty solidly.

Also Giolito can opt out after one year, that’s a huge difference.

I wonder if this deal opens up the ability to flip Nestor to the Brewers as part of a package for Corbin Burnes

Nobody touch Nestor or I get angry. He could have a 5era and I still don't want him gone.
I love Nestor too, but this strikes me as a piece that can go back in a trade with the receiving team still being able to compete this year (even while trading away a great asset, like Burnes).

I don't really understand why a competing team would give us their better pitcher for our worse pitcher unless they want to compete AND shed payroll mid-year? We did this with Montgomery but it wasn't pitcher for pitcher, we thought we were filling holes that needed to be filled.

Nestor is cheaper, has an extra year of control and would presumably come with serious prospects but anyway I don’t think it could happen now before July.

I wouldn't have hated that deal, to be honest. Five years is shorter than I thought he'd get offered (or for what he might sign for). I think Snell gets six or seven from someone.

Kay made me a little sad. I had no idea that Stroman has pissed of so many people.

I've never been a Stroman fan and don't understand why I have an irrational sense of confidence that (if healthy) he'll be great fit in pinstripes, but I do. Maybe it's just the groundball rate + good infield defense. Maybe it's because I believe he really wants to be a Yankee and that can be important. Dunno. Sounds like fans will be coming at him early and often. Hope he balls out right from the start and gets people on his side.

Are there any articles or explanations about what Stroman does on social media that has caused everyone in New York to hate him?
He retweeted and supported some antisemitic stuff that Kyrie Irving talked about on social media and then when he got called on it doubled down. He then dog whistled about how it's important to do your own research and understand who are the ones who really control the mainstream media

Actually I think the Yankee-specific thing was in 2019 when the Yankees didn’t trade for him at the deadline and then too honest/forthcoming Cashman said publicly they didn’t see him as a difference maker. So then Stroman posted that he would do better over the next few years on the staff than everyone but Cole, which was both justified and correct.

But much like Danny Ainge and Tree Rollins, many forgot who actually initiated that and just got mad at the person they liked less (which is saying something given how many mouthbreathing Yankee fans still talk shit constantly about Cashman).

Cashman on the then-28/year-old Stroman at 2019 trade deadline:

"We were interested but we didn't think he would be a difference-maker. We felt he would be in our bullpen in the postseason."

Stroman responded on Twitter (keep in mind he was a Yankee fan growing up and wanted to come to NYY at this deadline if possible):

“Besides Cole, there’s no current Yankee pitcher who will be anywhere in my league over the next 5-7 years. Their pitching always folds in the end. That lineup and payroll should be winning World Series left and right…yet they’re in a drought. Lol.”

So let's examine the evidence five years later:

The 2019 Yankees won 103 games and swept the ALDS before losing 4-2 to HOU in the ALCS (again). NY's rotation in the ALCS was Tanaka, Happ and Cole, and Tanaka again on full rest in game 4. However this three man rotation only worked until game 6 (played on 3 days rest from game 3) so NY went with Chad Green as the opener, and he gave up 3 runs in the 1st of a season-ending 6-4 loss. NY certainly could have used Stroman in that game if not sooner.

Tanaka and Happ have been out of MLB since 2020 and 2021 respectively, pretty sure history has proven Stroman completely correct in this back and forth. The only thing that he was somewhat wrong about is that it is almost always the hitting that has let down recent NYY teams in the postseason, not the pitching.

Also a good opportunity for me to point out that one always comes off as more of a dick when they include a 'LOL' in message board/social media posts.

He's a very good pitcher. And yet, here I am thrilled the Yankees signed him because he owns one of the worst personalities in baseball. A true living stereotype of short guy with a chip on his shoulder who never shuts up (and has a knack for saying dumb things). He was already a hot mess with the Mets and now he's doubling down in NYC with the harder team to play for. It's beautiful, and win-win for non-Yankees fans. If he implodes (probably unlikely), great, but even if he pitches well he's going to run his mouth and generally act like a jerk so he'll be fun to root against. I love the signing.

FWIW, he hasn’t posted or liked anything on Twitter since July, or at least he’s deleted everything since then.
