His most likely scenario is that NY tries to sneak him through waivers once they need the 40 man spot, and he spends the year in AA/AAA if no one claims him. It's unlikely he even bats once for the MLB team.

First hand account from Boone on the courtship of Yamamoto. May be the most real information we've gotten so far.

https://theathletic.com/5155246/2023/12/21/yankees-aaron-boone-yoshinobu-yamamoto/

NEW YORK — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone brought a gift. As a group of Yankees decision-makers spoke with Yoshinobu Yamamoto, hoping to convince him to wear pinstripes, Boone reached grabbed an actual pinstriped uniform top and handed it to the star Japanese pitcher. On the back was the No. 18 — Yamamoto’s favorite.

“I gave him that jersey,” Boone said Thursday. “It’s his if he wants to keep it.”

The Yankees also pulled from their past while trying to impress Yamamoto, who’s currently sifting through offers from as many as seven serious suitors, including the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers — the teams thought to be the biggest threats to the Yankees in their quest to land the 25-year-old.

They played for Yamamoto a video from Japanese star and fan favorite Hideki Matsui, who became a Bronx legend in his seven years with the team.

“Hopefully that stuff is things that matter and add up,” Boone said. “We’ll see.”

Boone added that he didn’t know quite where things stood with Yamamoto as he looks to secure a deal that could top $300 million.

The 50-year-old manager was speaking at a charity event in the Bronx in which he handed out groceries alongside his sons and Santa Claus at the 44th Precinct in the Bronx — a mere seven blocks from Yankee Stadium. The groceries, which he personally paid for, came from The Food Bank of New York. Members of the community also received a $25 gift certificate to C-Town and Bravo supermarkets. Additionally, each family received a toy meant for their children as Christmas approaches.

“To be able to have a small role and hopefully providing a little bit better of a holiday for them, for the people in the community, is something I’m excited to be able to partner in,” Boone said.

The Yankees have met twice with Yamamoto — once at the office of his representatives, Wasserman Media Group, in Los Angeles and once at an undisclosed location in New York. The meetings happened on Dec. 11 and this past Sunday, respectively. During the meetings, the Yankees were extremely impressed with Yamamoto the person, who in their two meetings with him came off as intelligent and confident, and he was clear that he wants to be able to operate his own way, the way he did in Japan — from his somewhat unorthodox training methods to his style of pitching. The Yankees felt positive in their conversations with him about wearing pinstripes, which at least touched on their history of Japanese stars who enjoyed playing in the Bronx (Ichiro Suzuki, Masahiro Tanaka, Hideki Matsui, Hiroki Kuroda).

“It’s been fun to get to meet (Yamamoto) a couple of times and be around him and have conversations and interact,” Boone said. “Now we’ll see how it goes. I know all the teams are now putting their best foot forward and negotiating. That’s above my pay grade. We’ll see where it lands.”

Boone called Yamamoto a “special dude.”

“Really some presence to him,” the manager said. “Comfortable in his skin. Confident. Humility to him. It’s been nice to get to know him in less formal environments where you can let your hands drop and have real conversations. It’s been fun to do that.”

He added that it was important to the Yankees that Yamamoto ask them about any questions he had about the organization.

“Certainly from different levels of the organization, give him an idea of our history from 0ur view and from (general manger Brian Cashman’s) view, from my view. (Pitching coach) Matt Blake,” Boone said. “You’re trying to just be authentic and get to know each other and get the dialogue such that you’re comfortable. You certainly want to make him feel like you understanding that, coming over from Japan, there’s all kinds of adjustments that you and I can’t even imagine. He’ll have a team of people with him when he does come over and you want to make sure that is as seamless as possible, try and give them ideas about how you plan on making that seamless.”

The Yankees are far from the only team to have met with the three-time winner of the Eiji Sawamura Award, Nippon Professional Baseball’s equivalent of the Cy Young Award. Yamamoto also has met twice with the Mets and once with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. The Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies are also thought to be serious about their pursuits of Yamamoto, who comes to the U.S. with a career 1.72 ERA and a 75-30 record over seven seasons.

"Aaron Boone said that Jasson Domínguez is doing "really well" and that he should look like "a lot like a regular player" in spring training. Nothing new/concrete on his timeline, but Boone is optimistic The Martian will be back "sooner rather than later." "

Weird, now Trevino commenting on Yamo.

[Trevino] “He’s a stud. Flat out stud. I’ve actually have been watching highlights of him for a while now.” @HipHipJose5 says Yoshinobu Yamamoto is a “once in a lifetime talent” and that the pinstripes are heavy but the “parade will be worth it.” #Yankees

Starting to think they wouldn't be so open talking about him unless they were supremely confident.

That's good, but like Harper, he probably still won't be able to play the OF and throw for quite awhile.

I still can't say I'm a fan of young Verdugo, but I did like this part:

"It got me excited. I shaved right away just so I could like y'know feel like I'm in it. I work out every day in a Yankees hat, y'know I got it right here, just to kind of see it. What it looks like on me, how it feels."

Martino seems to have an inside track here. Must have made a connection with a source who works for the agent because he's had the most solid information.

He always has the inside scoop from the Mets front office as he puts out stories for them when they ask.

Yankees have 1-2 Hot Stove shows scheduled each week, at different times around NYY events but also the YES schedule. The next one (just the 2nd this week) starts in 2 minutes.

Curry "surmising" that the Yankees made a substantial offer and he is inching to a decision.

Also "stay tuned for the next 60 minutes, you don't know what's going to happen."

Just speculation on my part, but I think a team made a ridiculous offer at some point today and now the agent is just seeing if the others are willing to exceed it. This “substantial offer” seems to be what got the ball rolling tonight.

You could be right. It it automatically eliminated SF, who wouldn't go there.

Now how does NY pivot? They have to add to the rotation, even if they love the prospects (and I do think Will Warren is very promising and can help right out of the gate this year).

Doesn't seem like Snell is a fit for the Yankees, but I can imagine they'd jump in on Cease.

I keep saying it but Snell is staying on the West Coast if at all possible, maybe the Giants will give him the mammoth deal he wants.

Cease I guess is possible, CHW would have to be sold on Peraza as the main chip there, I think. I'm not sure NY has the middle infield depth to trade him, though.

Yep, 8/200 for Monty seems about right. I’d imagine he goes to the Yankees or they pull off a deal for Burnes.

Montgomery to the Yankees, Snell to SF, Imanaga to the Mets would be a nightmare scenario for Boston.

Welp, Yankees probably going to suck again this coming season. Waste of Judge and Cole's prime. There is zero starting pitching depth after Cole and the rest of the free agent pitching class is real bad.

Oh well. I'm good with this. I wanted him and I didn't care about the cost too much but in the end, it makes it more likely that we can keep Soto and we still have the ability to acquire pitching.

Easy there, buckaroo, plenty of time left in the offseason and pretty clearly NY is going for it this year with half their lineup hitting FA after the season (Soto, Torres, Verdugo, Rizzo although he has a club option).

Eh, the Yankees literally have one player people would feel confident about starting a playoff game. They really needed Yamamoto + trading prospects for at least one more starter. I also can't believe Yankees fans would want Monty back when he wasn't even good enough to start a playoff game for the team before he was traded.

Well, good news is you have a lot more free time now next season.

Personally I'm still pretty pumped about this team, let's see what they do next. I think they basically did their best here, possibly outclassed in the in person meetings though (why were Judge and Cole not at this if NY was that serious?).

Not surprised. Southern California is nice. The FA SP offerings left aren't too inspiring. I wonder if Cashman tries to swing a trade for Luzardo and then takes a look at some FA RPs.

F the Steinbrenners. And Cashman. Be aggressive for a one year rental, but not for someone who will be around past then. Next year's FA class is also terrible outside of Soto.

They offered a 5'10:" pitcher $300M!!!!

More details will come out but honestly it seems exactly the same to me as how Cole's FA played out, with the reverse result. Maybe we should be more thankful as NY fans that NY actually won the bidding for two $300M+ California-raised superstars in Cole and Judge.

The position player side of things is a hundred percent set for now, I think, and NY has more internal pitching than people think. Peter Gammons was raving about Will Warren all the way back in 2022, I'm excited to see him maybe get a chance as IMO he is the #5 guy right now (Beeter is on the 40 man which Warren is not, but I think Beeter is #6). NY needs SP depth though.

Kershaw is a free agent right? I'd see about offering him an incentive laden deal (and give him a nice long break in August or something).
He is hurt and out for at least the first half of the season, supposedly if he comes back (he would like to probably) it will be only with LAD or TEX (although that was before today).

I think NY needs a righty SP if at all possible, Rodon and Nestor are both lefties.

Cole (R)
Rodon (L)
Cortes (L)
Schmidt (R)
Warren (R)

If you are adding a guy from outside, you presumably want to slot him into the top 4 above Schmidt, then you'd have three lefties in the top four. That's one of the reasons why NY traded Montgomery instead of Schmidt in 2022, because they knew they would go hard after Rodon that winter and keeping Montgomery would mean three lefties.

Rodon was the key to the team last year (I said this in the spring) and we all saw how that worked out. Right now he is probably the primary key to the team again, 2021-22 Rodon would vault this team up quite a bit.
