Here
I'd seriously just be tempted to pay Revis 3/42 and be done with it. I think he'd take it, or something close.

That was my second thought, but I don't think anyone is paying attention to it this early. Teams are only concerned with their own schemes. I think it's more likely they're either starting out basic, or my first thought - copying Seattle. It could be anything. It's just worth keeping an eye on.

RE:  Reiss tweet linked above ("After the big hit, CB Brandon Browner looked to the sky and roared with emotion. D has been practicing w/ attitude.")
Reminds me of the early days of Rodney Harrison. One thing that has been missing from the Pats' D since Rodney left is that level of attitude. THe Pats' D's best players over the last few years -- Mayo, Wilfork, DMC, Talib, Jones -- have been quiet players for the most part.

Does anyone know when the in stadium practice for Foxboro residents and season ticket holders is taking place?

I really like this pickup; I thought he'd get drafted more 4th-5th, and was surprised he slipped. I couldn't find what the knee injury was though, anyone find anything?

Awesome!  I loved Gaffney going into the draft.  He was a lot of fun to watch at Stanford.  One of those players that dominated at times in college football, put up good, solid but not off the charts combine numbers and then inexplicably drops in the draft. Hopefully he comes back healthy next year.

After reading and hearing how great Revis has been, how many of you think that the Pats can somehow sign him after this year?

Well, we have a thread to discuss just that: http://sonsofsamhorn.net/topic/82218-isle-de-revis-only-the-2nd-best-cb-in-the-division/page-13

It's a huge cap hit but not out of discussion. I highly doubt Revis takes a lower annual average pay just because it's a multi-year. He's sticking to $16m "take home" a season and not budging.

He tore his meniscus.  It's not as serious as what happened to Jake Ballard.

It's great leverage against losing Ridley or Vereen at the end of the year as well.  Gaffney reminds me of Blount in his running style.

Gaffney was injured during a FAN FEST:

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2014/07/26/5069241/panthers-rookie-rb-tyler-gaffney.html#.U9a8zPldV8E

Running back Tyler Gaffney’s rookie season is over before it ever started.

Gaffney, the Carolina Panthers’ sixth-round pick from Stanford, will undergo season-ending surgery on his left knee after injuring his knee on the first play of Friday’s Fan Fest.

Rivera said Gaffney was injured carrying the ball on a sweep Friday. Gaffney, who played a season of minor-league baseball, said he’s not had any previous knee issues.

“I was running outside zone, I made a couple of cuts, got upfield, made one last cut and it kind of felt a little bit uneasy,” Gaffney said. “I’ve never had a knee problem in my life, so I knew something was probably wrong.”

Ha! I was just about to say the same. The shuffling and the shoulder dip. Obviously not as powerful as LGBT but hey, the price is right.

Yeah, I *think* the knock on him - which if so is totally legitimate - was that his bruising downhill style worked great against Pac-12 front 7s, not so much against NFL personnel. He's 25ish pounds lighter than Blount, but maybe there's some room to pack on more poundage. Either way, a torn meniscus isn't the end of the world, and this kid may not be a sure thing but he deserves at least a crack at the show. Might as well be in NE.

I don't understand teams.  You've got a 90-man roster right now, meaning there is a ton of fat.  All you have to do is wait, and you can get him on IR with no risk. I'm glad the Pats take advantage.

I have to say, a Stanford standout going to the Patriots in a controversial manner that upsets other teams is basically one of the best things that can happen to me as a pats fan in late July.

Edit: Mainer, I think they just tried to get cute.

Won't the Pats need to put him on the 53 in a month or risk losing him to another team?  Will they do that?  Or am I missing something about the IR process?

no, i forget what the number is, but at some point (before 53) you don't have to go through IR to get put on waivers. Which is why it's odd that the Panthers did this so soon (cue: "there's a gents agreement that he wouldn't be picked up")

Thanks, Tony.  Damn, I should have known that.  I now recall that they we under heat many years ago (during the Ray Berry administration, I believe) for presumably having a WR fake an injury in the final preseason game to avoid the waiver process.  Dierdorf or some other TV blowhard was all over it.

There seems to be a lot of love for James White out there.  Comments from reporters, Brady, BB, seems like a lot of noise for a mid-round rookie running back.  It got me thinking, that maybe Ridley's spot on this team is not as secure as everyone initially thought.  He is in the last year of his deal, the ball security issues are well documented and he adds nothing on special teams.  The obvious downside of cutting Ridley is that Vereen and White are both smaller backs. Bolden is not great shakes, but he is a bigger back and  special teams contributor.  If one of the undrafted rookies (Finch or Houston) shows up in camp, then keeping 5 RBs and Develin as a FB/H-Back/TE, might be rich for the position from a roster distribution view.  I hadn't thought of Ridley as a surprise camp cut, but depending on the play from the new backs it might not actually be that surprising.

For Dobson, sources revealed a new detail about the March 10 surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot. The surgery actually required the insertion of a permanent screw to aid the healing process, which speaks to the magnitude of the procedure.

The initial timetable was estimated at 2-3 months, but that is now an overly optimistic projection. Dobson didn’t even begin running until July, and that progression ultimately leads to aggressive planting and cutting. The second-year wideout and potential starter has been conditioning off to the side of the first four training camp practices, but his change-of-direction work hasn’t been showcased much out in the open.

Because stress fractures come with a high re-injury risk before a completed healing process — the injury popped twice on him last season — the Patriots medical staff is making sure Dobson is able to handle the rigors of the job before allowing him on the field.

As for Easley, who practiced during the final day of minicamp in June, sources have said there hasn’t been a setback. Easley had surgery Oct. 25 to repair a torn ACL in his right knee, and he is also working to regain full strength as he sets his sights on the regular-season opener.

Deadspin of course spun this as the Pats "screwing" the Panthers. Of course, the move is completely legal and the Panthers didn't seem pissed, even off the record.

Hilarious. Deadspin piece actually says, "FWIW, the Panthers' GM chalked this up to "business.'"

In other words, discount what the purported victim says, listen to us.

Just some nuggets from practice today.  The WR/DB 1-on-1's must be a treat to watch live.  Sounds like there is so much more competition this year than last year.  I'm glad Dennard is out there as his and Logan Ryan's development is crucial to the defense's depth.
Ben Volin ‏@BenVolin 1m
Brady, Gronk and Revis working alone together in a drill. Superstar overload

Mike Petraglia ‏@Trags 6m
Julian Edelman makes a couple of terrific catches including one on Revis while CB Alfonzo Dennard returns today #Patriots

Christopher Price ‏@cpriceNFL 10m
Logan Ryan made a nice pick on a Brady ball for Edelman. Really good theater in one-on-one battles between DBs and WRs this AM. #Patriots

Obligatory apology if posted elsewhere, but Logan Ryan on the short list of best CBs in the NFL? I like the guy but am I underrating him that much?

It depends on what you believe. Eye test or advanced stats?

From what I can see, he played very well, but probably shouldn't be listed as a top 15-20 CB in the NFL.

Advanced stats (PFF, in this case), say:

  • 11th best catch % against (tied with Sherman)
  • #1 in YAC against
  • #2 in NFL QB Rating against (throwing to his man in coverage) behind Sherman
  • #7 in tackling efficiency in the passing game (attempted tackles per each missed tackles)
  • #9 in cover snaps / target (how often a QB throws his way per snap)
  • #15 yards per cover snap
  • #6 cover snap / reception (how often a receiver catches a ball per snap)
So, if you look at the advanced numbers exclusively, he was easily a top 10 cornerback. My thoughts is that the author hedged his bet and decided to list him in honorable mention. I would have personally preferred to see him sack up and list him in the top 10 instead of just regurgitating all the names people always discuss. Of course, thats purely out of selfish desire (push advanced statistics into focus, have two Patriots cornerbacks in the top 10).

My parents are both Stanford alums, and since my alma mater doesn't even have football, I pay attention to Stanford more than anyone else.  Gaffney has some of the same stuff that made Rice/Sanders/Moss great.  They don't have a 5th gear that can blow people away, but they have a reserve of energy they can tap into a dozen or so times a game to create just enough space to get separation on a route, or evade a defender or break a tackle.  He also has the mental awareness to spot the moments when he can exploit that extra boost.  There are multiple shots (and some good ones in the highlight film), of him getting into the hole, spotting the 2nd level LB/CB, and making a move while getting through the line of scrimmage to make the 2nd line player miss.

I'll also note that having Shaw (former OLine coach under Harbaugh) really helped him at Standord.  One of the other big +'s about Gaffney is that he will slow down in the pocket to let the blockers ahead of him establish their blocks so he knows where the hole is.  Some of the speedier backs coming out of college recently (Richardson, for example) have had problems that they've run right into the blocks or not given them time to develop.  Patience is a skill that's hard to learn, and Gaffney has it.

Potential shift in center competition: This could turn out to be a crucial turning point in the team’s competition at center, as rookie Bryan Stork (fourth round, Florida State) walked off with a member of the athletic training staff midway through the practice after the team had been working on a run-game drill. Stork did not participate in the rest of practice, leaving the majority of reps to incumbent Ryan Wendell. His status now becomes an important storyline to monitor as it relates to one of the top competitions on the roster.

Biggest development of the day.
