Austin Rei was drafted by the Sox even after he turned down an invite to come to Boston for a private workout recently.
Wonder if they try to move him to 2nd like BA speculated in their write up? I'd like it a little more in that regard.TimScribble said:@MLBDraftTracker: 4 (111): @RedSox select Missouri State CF Tate Matheny. http://t.co/eVeuQWN4XB #MLBDraft

So 5 rounds in and no pitching yet?Section15Box113 said:
Interesting that the video lists him as a SS and shows him taking infield. Listed at 5'11", 165.
If there is a stupider rule in the NCAA book, I... OK, there are probably dozens of stupider rules. But that one -- that teams can't buy the kid a plane ticket to come work out -- is pretty bad.TimScribble said:He turned down the workout because it was expensive to fly out East.
Same.chrisfont9 said:Damn I am kicking myself for not going to a few Husky games this year after watching that Rei video.
agreed. but as you suggest, I am sure there is one small part of a bigger problem and many rules that need to change...chrisfont9 said:If there is a stupider rule in the NCAA book, I... A buddy of mine was an OSU journalist and still writes about their baseball/football teams, when I asked him about Rei he knew him immediately, described him as "a terror" (this is a good thing, as he is a Beaver fan).chrisfont9 said:Damn I am kicking myself for not going to a few Husky games this year after watching that Rei video.
That scouting report video was a little too honest for me...TimScribble said:@MLBDraftTracker: 6 (171): @RedSox select Ohio State RHP Travis Lakins. http://t.co/rYBnKQ1Whe #MLBDraft
Yeah maybe. Here's what the story said. Assuming they're right, I guess there is a line between expenses and "funding"?Captaincoop said:
Teams may cover expenses for a tryout per NCAA rules. No idea what the story was in this case, but it has nothing to do with the NCAA.
As the draft approaches, teams begin hosting players for private workouts. Players have to foot the bill, however, because current NCAA rules forbid players from accepting funding, whether it be from an agent or an organization. This makes part of the process somewhat preclusive and makes for tough decisions:
"The Red Sox wanted me to go to Boston on Wednesday. But I wasn't going to do that ... because it was expensive, East Coast -- not like every
That article is just wrong.chrisfont9 said:Yeah maybe. Here's what the story said. Assuming they're right, I guess there is a line between expenses and "funding"?
5-10 have a combined value $1,378,500. I haven't found any post-injury bonus projections, but anything beyond $1-$1.5 million would be too much, and that's with getting every pick between 5 and 10 to sign for 50% of slot.Tyrone Biggums said:I realize this but quite frankly you could draft him and draft a few under slot guys between 5-10th round.
Trying to track this down. Per NCAA bylaws (http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/D110.pdf):Captaincoop said:That article is just wrong.
NCAA Bylaw 12.1.2 Amateur Status. An individual loses amateur status and thus shall not be eligible for intercollegiate competition in a particular sport if the individual:
...
(d) Receives, directly or indirectly, a salary, reimbursement of expenses or any other form of financial assistance from a professional sports organization based upon athletics skill or participation, except as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations;
...
12.2.1.2 Tryout After Enrollment. After initial full-time collegiate enrollment, an individual who has eligibility remaining may try out with a professional athletics team (or participate in a combine including that team) at any time, provided the individual does not miss class. The individual may receive actual and necessary expenses in conjunction with one 48-hour tryout per professional team (or a combine including that team). The 48-hour tryout period shall begin at the time the individual arrives at the tryout location. At the completion of the 48-hour period, the individual must depart the location of the tryout immediately in order to receive return transportation expenses. A tryout may extend beyond 48 hours if the individual self-finances additional expenses, including return transportation. A self-financed tryout may be for any length of time, provided the individual does not miss class.
So maybe what they were requesting was technically considered participating in a practice rather than a tryout?12.2.2 Practice Without Competition. An individual may participate in practice sessions conducted by a professional team, provided such participation meets the requirements of NCAA legislation governing tryouts with professional athletics teams (see Bylaw 12.2.1) and the individual does not:
(a) Receive any compensation for participation in the practice sessions;
(b) Enter into any contract or agreement with a professional team or sports organization; or
(c) Take part in any outside competition (games or scrimmages) as a representative of a professional team

I refrain from paying much attention to the MLB draft as it's such a crapshoot, but I'm certainly not opposed to drafting a LHP who touches 95 and only gave up 16 hits in 48 innings this year!TimScribble said:@MLBDraftTracker: 8 (231): @RedSox select IMG Academy LHP Logan Allen. http://t.co/kgRFa6gnhH #MLBDraft
