Brings the roster down to 81. I would assume Tyler Gaffney and Marcus Martin will go IR and NFI list so that means only 4 more cuts to be made.Christopher Price @cpriceNFL 21s
WR Derrick Johnson will be released by the #Patriots today, per a league source.

Chris Martin very likely to be placed on reserve/NFI since he hasn't practiced yet
Mankins wasn't at practice also. Hawkins has already been cut. None of these guys would be shocking cuts.
Travis Hawkins and sixth-rounder Jemea Thomas, linebacker Cameron Gordon, defensive linemen Ben Bass and Chris Jones, as well as offensive lineman Chris Martin -- currently on the non-football injury list -- were also not spotted.
One fewer OL, at any rate. Maybe someone in the defensive front seven?( . ) ( . ) and (_!_) said:If three TEs make the roster now, where do you think they cut from? I have to think Hooman still makes it as Wright is not an inline TE. Did one of the bubble safeties just lose his spot?
60 snaps, which isn't nothing, but it's not significant (about 25th on TB, just by eyeballing it).( . ) ( . ) and (_!_) said:I can't check now, but did Wright play any special teams last year?
Tony C said:Wow, that's an early cut on Jemea Thomas.
That's still an option.Stitch01 said:True, but you can usually make the practice squad if you are in Thomas spot and show well when you are on the field.
One gone.Super Nomario said:My 53-man projection breakdown (I have 84 players presently under contract)
Locks (40)
Lead-pipe locks - uncuttable due to role (21): Brady, Vereen, Edelman, Amendola, LaFell, Gronkowski, Solder, Vollmer, Cannon,Mankins, Wilfork, Chandler Jones, Ninkovich, Mayo, Hightower, Collins, Revis, Logan Ryan, Arrington, McCourty, Harmon
No changes here.Super Nomario said:Redshirt brigade - going to make it due to contract / potential but role for 2014 is unclear (6) - Garoppolo, James White, Dobson, Cameron Fleming, Stork, Easley
Special teams locks - either these guys are going to make it or they're going to need a replacement filling the same role (7) - Gostkowski, Allen, Aiken, Slater, Ebner, Kanorris Davis, Chris White
Added Wright to this group.Super Nomario said:Near-locks - not unthinkable they wouldn't make it but it would be a pretty big shock (3) - Mallett, Ridley, Dennard, Tim Wright
That they're not on IR yet bodes well.Super Nomario said:Health questions - would seem to be locks if healthy but might end up on IR (3) - Hoomanawanui, Chris Jones, Siliga
With Mankins' departure, there's a real (even likely) chance that both Wendell and Connolly make the team.Super Nomario said:The Bubble (30)
Earned a job in camp (4) - Develin, Thompkins, Kline, Butler
Competitions, loser gets cut (4) - C (Wendell vs Connolly), S (Tavon Wilson vs Chung)
Some cuts already, with Gordon to IR and J.Jones and Thomas cut.Super Nomario said:Need more depth - will take at least one at each of these (16) - RB (Bolden, Finch, Gray), OL (Devey, Halapio, Barker), DL (Vellano, Worthy), Edge (Buchanan, Zach Moore, Fleming, Bequette), LB (Beauharnais,Gordon, Morris, Ja'Gared Davis)
Crowded out - probably enough locks to fill the position, but who knows (6) - WR (Boyce, Gallon), TE (Maneri,Justin Jones), DB (Jemea Thomas, Swanson)
Gaffney did get added to IR, as did Cameron Gordon.Super Nomario said:Not on the 53 (14)
Stash them elsewhere (4) - Suspended List (Tyms, Browner), IR (Gaffney, Gordon), NFI (Chris Martin)
Unsurprisingly, a lot of cuts from this group.Super Nomario said:Longshots / practice squad (10) -Van Hooser, Derrick Johnson, Cave, Tuipulotu,Bass, Manumaleuna,Skinner, McCuller,Hawkins, Gary
I'd subtract Mankins (obviously) and Vellano and add Wright and Connolly. Toughest cut is Devey, who probably ends up making it if someone surprising goes.Super Nomario said:Final prediction: the 40 locks above, plus Develin, Thompkins, Kline, Butler, Wendell, Tavon Wilson, Bolden, Halapio, Vellano, Worthy, Buchanan, Zach Moore, Beauharnais
Yes Boyce has to be gone and Gallon wouldn't shock me either as Tyms is conveniently stashed for 4 weeks if needed and White is essentially a slot WR anyway. I don't see what purpose Boyce or Gallon really serve.MainerInExile said:I didn't have Finch or Gray making it, so it looks to me like the extra TE spot is going to come out of the WR pool. That soon? Don't they have till 4 tomorrow,Ed Hillel said:We should know in the next hour or so what the roster is. Given the way Wilson played yesterday, I think my bet with Stitch may drag out another year. Reiss actually has Harmon as the odd man out in his predictions.

Yeah, I think that's probably even crazier than cutting Ridley. I think Reiss feels the need to predict a "surprise" cut. To me, the smart money is still on Harmon starting at SS, and even if he's the third S he's still the best backup option at FS. And it's not like he plays no special teams.Ed Hillel said:We should know in the next hour or so what the roster is. From what I’m hearing, #Patriots are keeping 5 safeties to start: McCourty, Harmon, Chung, Tavon Wilson and Ebner
Reiss' cuts have been goofy all preseason. I find him very unreliable in this area.Super Nomario said:Yeah, I think that's probably even crazier than cutting Ridley. 5 safeties doesn't surprise me ... but I'm surprised one wasn't Kanorris Davis (over one of Wilson / Chung). I wonder who will be the other gunner opposite Slater.Tony C said:here's one tweet with a snippet of info...if true, glad to see Tavon made it.
I don't think it was ever really a "A/R/D at safety" package vs a "3 CB / 1 S" package. Some teams play a lot of 3 WR and run out of that set, since it usually gets a LB off the field in favor of a CB. By taking a S off instead of a LB, they keep a strong front 7 but still match up against the receivers. The key here is McCourty, who's rangy enough to play one-high coverage shells.soxfan121 said:I guess the Arrington/Ryan/Dennard safety experiment did not go as well as they hoped.
“A lot of their two-tight-end formations played like three receivers and one tight end, and even their three-receiver set kind of played like four receivers because they still had a good tight end in there,” Belichick said. “In that position that Kyle and Logan played, I would say relates more to the nickel position that they play in sub-defense than it does to the safety position in a regular defense against a two receiver set.
“Not saying that there’s not some application of both, but because it’s a multiple receiver team that nickel position, the slot guy, could either be on that receiver or he could be playing some type of zone coverage more like a safety. But it’s against that type of personnel group that we’ve done it."
My question is who the heck is he hearing this from? Bill isn't leaking this and I doubt any of his assistants would violate The Patriot Way.Tony C said:here's one tweet with a snippet of info...if true, glad to see Tavon made it.

Belichick basically confirms as much: http://www.providencejournal.com/sports/patriots/content/20140816-bill-belichick-says-kyle-arrington-and-logan-ryans-work-at-safety-was-more-of-a-formality.ece

This has come up before. Browner's built like a safety, but my understanding is that he isn't as strong in zone coverage and his best asset is his ability to press at the line, so using him at safety wouldn't be a good use of his skills. I could see the Pats matching him up against a pass-catching TE instead of a WR, which is sort of safety-ish, but I don't think we'll see much of him actually playing safety.BannedbyNYYFans.com said:
First off, I apologize if this was brought up in the BBTL forum before. The Pats seem to (finally) have an abundance of decent CBs. Dennard looks good coming into season three, Arrington has always played decent in the slot and Ryan has showed glimpses of decent play....and of course they have this guy named REVIS. But the big concern in the secondary is the safety opposite DMC. So, why don't they use Browner there? He's physical and has speed more in line with a S than CB. And if the NFL really is serious about calling more defensive holding/interference, he'll lose some of his value at CB.
Will Browner be a CB in name only? Will BB use him as a safety in some situations? Because the idea of Chung playing a lot snaps scares the crap out of me. I'm okay with it on running downs I guess, but the league is so pass heavy at this point, I don't even know if "running downs" exist anymore.
Super Nomario, KFP, or soxfan121...isn't Browner really a better fit at safety? Can you help me out?

I think Reiss reported the Pats were using Chung at S on running downs and subbing in Harmon on passing downs. That plan makes sense. I'm not convinced Chung makes the team though.
They play 2 LBs ~70% of the time, so running 3 deep there isn't a big concern. LB depth isn't ideal, but it wouldn't be one of my top 5 concerns with the team (maybe not even top 10).doctormoist said:Is anyone else concerned about LB depth? They appear to be counting on Mayo to be healthy, Hightower to become more of a complete player (he still gets smoked in coverage), and for Collins to really break out. Beyond this, it looks like a bunch of special teamers. I suppose some DL (Jones? Nink?) might see time playing off the line in some formations.
