9/8 - Win It For James Collins

Okay, probably not a lot of competition to start game threads right now. But.

9/7 was the second birthday of my son, named James Collins <Flexerson>. No game that day. Maybe for the best.

Well, it's game day. And, yes, I somehow convinced my wife two years ago that naming our son after one of the greatest Red Sox of all time would be something we could and should do (I think Jimmy Collins being something of a historic trivia question rather than, like, a contemporary ESPN personality probably helped my case).

And I won't lie, I was immensely proud of this recent moment:

Anyways, the little man (and his old man) spent all of his 2nd birthday managing a fresh diagnosis of foot, mouth and hand disease so it wasn't exactly a banner celebration. So maybe the Red Sox can raise a banner* tonight, yeah? Here's hoping the Sox can bring their A game and win one for a young (but older every day) Jimmy Collins.

Go Sox.

*Metaphorical, obviously

The Trop is awful, but the Rays play like pros.
We hung tough but lost because our offense froze.
I sure hope we don’t find ourselves in the throes
of a long losing streak. Dear God. I hate those.
Our season has had its share of highs and lows.
Sometimes we rise up to the team we oppose.
We stand tall, eye to eye, our toes to their toes.
We refuse to back down while matching their blows.
Other times, we don’t have a plan and it shows.
We cannot find our toughness and we expose
our weaknesses, allowing teams to bulldoze
right over us (like those machines when it snows.)
As the ’23 season draws to its close,
our hope doesn’t die (although sometimes, it slows.)
Perhaps tonight will bring an end to our woes.
We’re back in Boston to face our feathered foes.
Let’s put them in coffins secured with red bows,
bury their carcasses, then not leave a rose.
(At least try to win, and we’ll see how it goes.)
Will these games really matter? Nobody knows.
Losing’s for the birds, so let’s beat the damn O’s.

*applause*

I never hated the Orioles like I do the Yankees, or even like I do on a lesser level, the Rangers and Astros, but after Buck Showalter took over they jumped up to no. 2 on my loathsome list. I know Buck isn't there any longer but the hate lives on.

Umpiring is difficult. That said, retirement is a reasonable option.

Too close to take, even for Casas

Which reminds me, I wonder how Cowboy Joe would have dealt with Casas's habit of calling pitches during at-bats

I'm impressed with Houck so far tonight. One homer is nothing. Well, it's something, but it's not horrible. Now, if the Sox could only score a run or three....

On the one hand, Houck will pitch into the sixth
On the other hand, it's the dreaded third time through the order
On the other hand, he's only at 59 pitches
On the fourth hand, it doesn’t matter because the Orioles already have as many runs as they will need.

With that attitude I’m sure it will be! Good pitching is like a dog. It smells fear. Fuck these guys.
Living in the Baltimore area and having a wife who grew up there and is a huge O’s fan I have watched many of their games. They are a very good team, as much as I hate them. All their years of sucking has paid off with their highly ranked young player performing. That, coupled with some very good trades and acquisitions, has made this a team which will be troublesome for many years.
