The cap and so forth are the least of it. I don't understand why people can't grasp why you can't have murder defendants on your roster. Period. Now is different than 2000, and this guy is no Ray Lewis.

Yes and no.

The Pats will gain some benefit from releasing Hernandez this morning, instead of after his arraignment when he is remanded without bail, but I don't think that benefit is worth taking a $7.5mm cap hit in 2014.

I strongly suspect that the ESPN report that the Pats are SOL on the salary cap/signing bonus front is in error. It wouldn't be the first time a sportswriter completely whiffed when it comes to the business/legal side of the game.

Why are they still showing his house? They know he's not coming back any time soon right?

Probably a logistical nightmare to move all the equipment and relocate everything, so it's "the scene" until we get to the courthouse, and then the scene will switch.

Diligence is not a word I would use re this player. They extended him early, for a lot of money and without some pretty standard claw back provisions. See thread in V and N.

That said, they will learn from this. Don't expect any more sketchy character guys any time soon.

ESPN has cameras on the house, police station, and the courthouse....3 way split screen.

It was Schefter so it's almost certainly something he took from a reasonably good--but not perfect--source.  Somebody like a player agent or NFLPA rep who might view the CBA narrowly in this regard.

The Raiders? Of course the pending trial complicates a transition to a new team, as he might not be available for mini-camp to learn a new offense.

From what I've seen of the Raiders, this is more of a philosophical concern than an on-the-field one.

According to the jets cap guy the standard claw back provision is actually meaningless as it duplicates various rights the teams have elsewhere under the CBA.  Actually figuing out who is right would require you all to pay me at least $10. AN HOUR!

Nah, disagree.  No argument that the extension was a fiasco, but way overstated.  They will still have sketchy character guys when they perceive the value is there.  Even with this Hernandez was a good 4th round pick, it just the extension that sucked.  I do expect they'll be slower to do those with sketchy guys.

Seriously; the fact she's someone's fiance is probably enough to give her away. We'll all find out soon enough.

If I'm Bill the first thing I do is pick up the phone to Cincy and say "So, about AJ Green...". Brady to Green has a nice ring to it.

As well, I don't think the Patriots really thought he was still that risky.  Every indication was that he had been on the straight and narrow as a pro.  Pure speculation but maybe getting the contract made him less careful about who he was associating with and/or got the hangers-ons to be that much more tenacious.

Wait, is today "Steak and a Blowjob Day?"  Why don't calendars/calendar programs automatically include that as a holiday in this day and age?

Hernandez's lawyers must have completely misread the situation with the cops - otherwise they would have had him prepared, and the little love notes in media the other day between the parties seem a bit silly now.  For them to blast the media for an erroneous arrest report, and then have him arrested 2 days later is a little silly.  Only reason you'd made that statement was if you thought you could cooperate with the cops and work up some deal.  Clearly that did not happen. Certainly seems like they were blindsided by the arrest.

I've been a part of a case where we praised the DA, but in that instance, it was a plea negotiation tactic to keep everything friendly.  If that was the intent or even on the table, it certainly didn't work as demonstrated by this morning.

Obviously it didn't turn out that well but that extension was actually nicely structured from the Pats perspective, locking in Hernandez for a few more years at reasonable cap numbers and then making him easier to cut right before the cap hits got large.  I think it was still a reasonable decision given the information the team had at the time.

So...so much for that theory.

Oh, thanks.  So much for that "clue".

Is this tweet a dig at the Pats, Celt and Bruins?

It's stupidly passive-aggressive and snide and the bright boy in charge of the twitter account should knock it off.

Exactly.  As I said up thread, the decision about the extension was made following the Pats having had an opportunity to observe him up close for two seasons.  Obviously you can't know everything about a player and as it turns out I'm sure they wish that had that decision to do over again, but unless they ignored serious warning signs I don't think there is much they can learn from something like this. It is really a cluster fuck of almost unprecedented circumstances.

I don't get this.  From what little we know, it sounds like Hernandez, to borrow from Breaking Bad, is the one who knocks.  The whole "wrong place, wrong time, wrong crowd" argument seems tenuous to me.  Of course, I am basing all of this on speculation and his history of alleged close proximity to gun violence.

Don't know why this just crossed my mind, but with this media circus, could you imagine what the situation would be like if John Henry was involved in that death on his Yacht recently?

You don't think your environment and the types of areas and business that you are conducting can put you in bad situations?  It doesn't excuse the behavior, it's just a theory about how he could have gone from "risky" draft pick to "good citizen" Patriot for three years, back to "alleged murderer."  Unless there was a bunch of stuff covered up, it sounds like a guy who had put all that shit behind him, but then it came back big.
