#DFG: Canceling the Noise

Is there any level of suspension that you would advise Tom to accept?

From the article:

When defensive players get flagged for a helmet-to-knee hit on Tom Brady, Brady has been known to remind them: “They made that ----ing rule for me!”
Has anyone heard of this before? I haven't heard anything like this. I remember hearing Terrell Suggs complaining about the rule change but never that Brady taunts people about it.

That article is comical.  The TV outside the stadium is for them to be able to see replays more easily?  I mean, don't they have coaches in the booth whose job is to watch the replays?  Seems like that would be better than Belichick trying to get a glimpse of the TV outside the stadium that is partially obscured depending on where you are standing. Not to mention the fact that they show pretty much anything that is even remotely challengeable on the jumbotron INSIDE the stadium that can be seen easily by both sidelines.

And the whole thing about telling the ref before the game that he was going to do something completely legal but the ref being afraid to tell him that it was illegal is too stupid for words.

In order to fully address the various ways in which that article is stupid, ignorant and an outright affront to sports journalism, it would take more words than Rosenberg needed to pen it.

That's kind of impressive in its own right.  The stupidity is deep and broad.

Related to that, has anyone ever heard of a team running its trick plays by the league before a game?  That seems nuts to me given how leaky the SS Goodell seems to be.

In other news, I really cannot believe that after all of their other issues, the NFL is going to screw this up as well.  Instead of just getting this resolved quickly, they're now just saying they have no idea how long the "investigation" will take.

asked NFL a few more follow-up questions re ball issue; they have no further info at this time, including how long investigation will take

Are they really so incompetent that they don't realize that this is going to be a fortnight-long talking point if they don't get this resolved quickly?  They really have no idea how to "protect the Shield."  Bud Selig would make something like this go away in fifteen seconds if it risked impacting the storylines of the World Series.

It’s all very convenient that the national media is talking about this & not Indy having players miss the game for a rape arrest, a player missing the team flight & whatever happened to Trent Richardson. Place blame on those cheating Patriots (and let the media & trolls run wild) & deflect blame from Pagano & Luck.

Like it or not gents, but this will be one of the sub-themes for the next two weeks, so get used to it.

Hopefully, there is no damning proof and the anger this may generate among the Pats, gets turned on the SeaHawks..

This is Goodell.  When has he ever not made a mess out of things?

Running trick plays by the league? No. Checking in with the officials prior to the game? Yes, I've heard of that.

I'm guessing the whole article is broad satire.

There is likely some truth in the "If you ain't cheating you ain't trying" school that refers back to NASCAR.  Belichick is one of the most organized and driven gatherers and users of information there is.  I consider him basically a cold war era CIA station chief in a hoodie and headphones.  He's never been the only one to push the limits, just one of the better ones at it.  You think the attempts to decipher opposing teams' signals has stopped, in the Patriots or anywhere else in the league?  Good luck with that, though I'm guessing teams use more tradecraft to keep their communications as secure as is practical these days.

I don't think I understand why an investigation into this would take so long? Presumably you have most, if not all, the game balls in your possession. It would take, what, a half hour to calculate the pressure in each one? I'm sure that there was a camera on or near the ball attendants the whole time and NFL owns the film so it isn't like they need to go get it from somebody. There are issues such as the balls losing pressure between the end of the game and not, but you can probably calculate a semi-accurate depressurization rate, and there are probably error bands you can create too to figure out where each ball should theoretically be by now.

I FUCKING KNEW the league would fuck this up.

Cue two months from now, when all we get is a blurb on the crawl "NFL determines no wrong doing by patriots in ball inflation issue ..." So all people remember is "something shady about balls" and not that it was all a bunch of bullshit.

I think Goodell Is stupid enough to let the media dictate how big of a deal he should make of things, not the other way around.

This feckless weakling of a commissioner is actually going to allow this horseshit to fester all through the League's 2 week party?       Unreal.  Use it as fuel, and curb-stomp Seattle. Someone up thread alluded to i:  I love the Patriots, but have come to have utter contempt for the people that run this league.

@mikefreemanNFL: GM on Deflategate: Patriots dont get benefit of the doubt here.
Assistant coach: The NFL needs to really nail them.

@mikefreemanNFL: Based on texts Ive received, parts of the NFL assume the Patriots are guilty. No trial needed. Straight to the gallows, some think.

If form holds we'll get an "independent" investigation six months from now that tells us nothing and a series of commercials with a teary eyed Andrew Luck trying to talk about underinflated footballs.

Wow, competitors want the Patriots punish?  That's a shocker, nice job scoop.

Nail them on what?  And who is asking for the 'benefit of the doubt'?

Produce evidence.  That's sort of how it works when adults levy accusations.  Do these chodes remember Matt Walsh?  Where is John Tomase?  He may have a cautionary tale to tell.

Here, I'll give the NFL their gameplan:

1.) Speak to the game officials to determine if they have any insight or if there were any irregularities in protocol.
2.) Ask Kravitz to give up his source.  If he will not, broadcast that any source(s) with information should come forward.

Between here and everywhere.
Oh Christ. This really is going to become a thing, isn't it?

I really though the NFL would release a brief statement today saying that Yes, a ball was under inflated - but that was a common occurrence and no foul was committed.

But no, they're going to drag this out and make THIS a prominent storyline over the next two weeks.

The NFL could fuck up a wet dream.

The NFL needs to come down on the Patriots here.  They have been playing dirty since Kraft bought the team.  The integrity of the NFL is at stake.

Multi-billion dollar a year organization and it hasn't put in place what would be simple, easy-to-implement safeguards that would not only ensure that a team couldn't alter a ball, but would also eliminate the perception that one did.

Hey, it's a non-profit organization. It must shave expenses (e.g., referees' pensions) wherever it can.

That's nothing. Did you know that the Patriots players all get their own parking places at Gillette, but the opposing team has to share rides in a BUS when they play there? When will the NFL stop this injustice?

A bus with underinflated tires, no less.

Inside Lou Gorman's Head
Speedy resolution = "There is nothing here, so let's get on with our two-week party."

Dragging it out (public perception) = "We need to nail their asses, but don't want the loss of their next five first round picks and the Belicheat lifetime ban to detract from our two-week party."

Dragging it out (more likely) = "We're reacting to our inability to get anything right when it comes to discipline, so will take a few months to make sure we don't get it wrong and then will undercommunicate the findings so people think the worst, whether or not there was something here."

Obviously, that means the story continues through the run-up to the SB and the disrespect card is fully on the table.

Seattle's line all week should be "I don't know anything about that. You have to ask the league." Nevertheless, someone on that team is going to say something over the next 13 days to add fuel to the fire.

Pagano (not surprisingly) had no interest in talking about deflategate with the balls from yesterday's game.
So Pagano did not want to talk the supposedly deflated balls?

Finally, someone taking the high road on this whole stupidity.  Why the NFL has decided to drag it out will remain a mystery.

And this is only the beginning .

You just know that people will be calling for BB to be suspended or outright banned, for him to be barred from Canton, etc.

This is going to be Spygate part II, Electric Boogaloo, and we just have to sit and eat shit.
