#DFG: Canceling the Noise

Is there any level of suspension that you would advise Tom to accept?

Schlereth is mocking Goodell's statement about trying to "protect the integrity of the game" by pointing out that it's Goodell's own actions in these cases that has put the league's integrity into question
I'm sure there's a large population of former players who'd take issue with Goodell's statement but they're too busy sitting quietly in rooms with the shades drawn.

Tedy Bruschi on ESPN right now "the footballs were never deflated".  "I'm not satisfied with 'the procedure is flawed'."

Starts going off on the logo vs non-logo gauge. This is awesome.

I disagree that the ruling gives the Pats nothing to use to pursue the picks. Implicit in the ruling (at times rather explicit) is the point that Wells was not impartial. That alone should be enough for Kraft to re-open all of this.

Also, can someone quickly clarify what happens now with the NFL's appeal?

Mackie Mac on now- says she is very surprised. Didn't really admit she advised Brady to drop the whole thing and move on. Says Goodell and NFL got what they deserved.

For me she was the one whose "accept it and move on" take was the most disappointing. This saga has exposed legions of idiots in the media, and I'm not willing to go there for her but I wish she would own it at least.

Before he started rambling incoherently, he was skewering Roger on the "integrity of the game" canard, correctly pointing out the lack of integrity throughout the process.
It really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. There's nothing in Goodell's background that suggests he knows how to enforce a rule of law.

Even IF the balls were deflated (which I don't believe), Schlereth is in no opinion to accuse Brady of anything....

Schlereth has consistently been in the camp of Deflategate being much ado about nothing. He's not a Brady hater

Reading the finding, it's almost as if the NFL purposefully set themselves up for failure...because no one (or their high priced lawyers and investigators) could be that stupid.

Then again - NFL.

I think Wells comes out ok after this. He did as much (or as little) as he could get away with without committing fraud or perjury. His client is probably pissed about that.

For those not watching ESPN, Ley asked Bruschi why JJ and McNally were suspended. He said he didn't know. Ley said nobody knows or can answer that. Schefter chimes in and says "I can answer that." Ley looks stunned and says 7 million people would like to hear that answer. Schefter goes on to explain that it was a league request that the Pats complied with just like they complied with everything all along.

This Bruschi Schefter tandem is awesome right now.

At what point does Robert round up his supporters and get the vocal minority to stand down?
The other owners have to realize that this is no longer good for the game and is going to make them look worse and worse the longer this drags on.

Graziano said Berman used quote marks around "independent" about a dozen times when referring to the Wells report

The NFL *can* (but probably wont) ask Berman to "reconsider his decision." Moving for reconsideration is not a prerequisite for an appeal.

The NFL has 30 days to appeal to the 2nd Circuit.

correct. Tedy Bruschi said it well:

Has Goodell been at the previous Thursday Night Openers?

@BobSocci: Truly preserving the integrity of the game requires that those who oversee it are individuals of true integrity.

Wow. Socci always comes off as Mr. Vanilla.  Put it through the Zolak to English translater and it comes out "FUCK YOU HATERZ"

That statement from Goodell is very good as such statements go. They obviously won't be seeking a stay, which would be idiotic. It also flags to me that they probably won't move to expedite the appeal -- there is no basis for that, it would fuck with the season if successful, and it would appear vengeful.

And yet, it's striking how Goodell now freely acknowledges that all he cares about is own power.

GangGreen has someone absolutely melting down about this and its hilarious, particularly because his comments show he's a homophobic bigot. The tears as he bleats about how Brady is someday somehow going to get his (after four Super Bowls, a beautiful family, Hall of Fame, etc) are just delicious.

NFL would have to provide permission for Patriots to reinstate suspended employees John Jastremski and Jim McNally.

Tom Ley from Deadspin:

Goodell flexed on Tom Brady simply because Brady wouldn’t cooperate with this investigatory cosplay, and that’s the funniest thing about all of this. Goodell and his minions got all the power they wanted, and all it’s resulted in is a player who almost definitely did what he was accused of sticking his middle finger in Goodell’s face and getting off scot-free. In the real world, it turns out, due process isn’t an impediment to justice, but the basis of it.

Is it lack of integrity or lack of organization? I don't know what makes anybody think that a business like the NFL would have a system of discipline that was on par (in design) with the U.S. justice system, for example. They're good at making money through football, but it makes as much sense for someone of Roger Goodell's background and position to be overseeing justice as it does to have Jack Welch rewire my home because he ran GE. The start would be to hire someone who has a background in the law for such a role.

Yes, I realize the NFL has lawyers, but they're clearly not utilizing them as needed.

Goodall foreclosed Brady from exploring “how and why the NFL’s general counsel came to edit a supposedly independent report.” Boom.

Her Twitter feed is really fun right now

Berman’s decision on #tombrady signifies end of the “we’re the ranchers you’re the cattle” era in NFL.

I hope this is the case. Let the glory be where it truly belongs, with the men tested in the Gridiron.

No, in fact, Berman explicitly declined to rule on the partiality issue.
