Once again, this is great for the NFL. Its amazing how many people fail to see this. There is controversy and drama except this time it doesn't involve concussions, CTE, domestic violence, ugly locker-room behavior or murder (all stuff that generated far fewer clicks and eye-balls than this "scandal"). Your mother in law, the Uber driver, the folks at the office who cannot name a single NFL player not named Aaron Rogers or Peyton Manning are all talking about this leading up to the league's signature event.
The storyline is set - the Seahawks, a trash-talking but hard playing team led by the squeaky clean QB, Russell Wilson and his affable, clean-living coach Pete Carroll versus the villainous, cheating, evil-genius Bill Belichick and the looks-so-good-he-has-to-be-bad QB Tom Brady. Not one of these folks who are essentially novices know about Carroll's sordid history with USC or his practice rule violations nor do they care. And the NFL is going to let this one play out because it does one thing well which is market itself and this is good marketing.
Anyone expecting this to be clarified or the investigation results to come out this week is going to be disappointed. If what Belichick said was accurate, it clearly calls into question how the refs inspected the balls submitted by the Patriots - what the NFL won't do is throw their officials under the bus before the Superbowl. Instead, they will let this story play itself out all week because despite the fact that there are far more important issues around the globe, all people want to talk about is how the Patriots cheated their way into another Superbowl (unless you are a Pats fan or a rational person). This is fucking bread and circus to the max except nobody is dying and no women are being savagely beaten in a casino elevator. The Shield loves this.
