When I was at ESPN we had at least a half dozen major layoffs. And literally every time on the day people got axed I’d hear from someone “I heard Norby is gone”. And yet, every single time, he was not gone. The guy was a survivor, that’s for sure.I guess Pat McAfee won that round.

Longtime ESPN Executive Norby Williamson to Exit
The classic Friday afternoon news dump and this is HUGE news, he was the machine behind ESPN for years and years. When most ESPN insider news was reported elsewhere, high % chance came from him. McAfee called him out on it but he's been leaking stuff and the 'espn source' for years and years.I guess Pat McAfee won that round.

ESPN and Peyton Manning‘s Omaha Productions have signed a new long-term content deal that will keep Manning in business with the sports network until 2034.
I want to like Bryant but he seems to be going round and round in circles trying to figure out a way to make this about "toughness" when all he's really saying is that they should finish off opponents when they have the lead. When oh WHEN will these Celtics prove they are tough?! One other adjective you can't be without a championship ring, apparently. Seems to me the Celtics continuing with all their winning seasons since 2016-17 (Jaylen's rookie season) amongst a lot of turnover of complementary pieces is the definition of a tough Jaylen/Jayson foundation.

8-2 in elimination games over the last 3 years: Not tough. When oh WHEN will these Celtics prove they are tough?! One other adjective you can't be without a championship ring, apparently. Talking about last year is only slightly more relevant than how Hank Finkel replaced Bill Russell.Counterpoint: They put themselves in a position last year where they’ve had to play 10 elimination games in 5 rounds. That includes 6 elimination games last years in 2 rounds, including going down 3-0 to a team that was down late in a play-in game and down 3-2 to a team that wasn’t playing Joel Embiid. And they haven’t been tested at all this playoffs.
The truth is somewhere in between but let’s not act like the Celtics have always been a lock in tight situations.
I did not bring up their record in elimination games the last two years as something in their favor. I also don’t agree last year is completely irrelevant given they return 7 of their top 9 players including their 2 best players. 100% relevant, no. But I don’t think you can throw away last year because they added Porzingis and Holiday.Talking about last year is only slightly more relevant than how Hank Finkel replaced Bill Russell.
Point of order, you mean "asshole" in a complimentary manner, right?"Complimentary fashion" huh? Ooookay, whatever he needs to tell himself to justify being an asshole.
How the fuck is this guy so goddamned popular?
Not in the least. And I won't apologize for it either.Point of order, you mean "asshole" in a complimentary manner, right?
I feel like you're making this exclusively about the use of the word "bitch" rather than how he used it. Context does matter. Cumming wasn't calling any specific person a bitch. Cardi B was calling herself a bitch. Los Bitchos is the name the band gave themselves. McAfee called Caitlin Clark a "white bitch". That's not him repeating something that Clark called herself. That's not him using a generalized profanity for shock and emphasis. There's no context in which what he said is appropriate or simply lazy broadcasting. That sort of thing has to be called out when it happens, or it does become accepted language.I'm an idiot and still sometimes look at Rolling Stone's website in futile attempts for music news. I checked three minutes ago and saw the following headlines:
Alan Cumming on His Eclectic Career Choices: 'Deal With It, Bitches'
Cardi B on Proving Her Greatness: ‘I’m That Bitch, and Y’all Fucking Know It’
Los Bitchos Dance on the Sand in Video for Beach Rocker 'Don't Change'
As much as I loathe McAfee's brand of whatever it is, this seems like a sloppy, lazy broadcaster being sloppy and lazy. He used overly familiar, increasingly accepted language like a white dude quoting the wrong rap song. It certainly isn't good but the pearls should probably remain unclutched.
You clicked and shared. They aren’t pathetic, they know what people want/hate.View: https://twitter.com/awfulannouncing/status/1809733936903548939?s=46
and if his name was bronny jones he would not even have a single article written about him..
Just flipped to the ESPN app as a quick break from work. Second video highlight is Bronny air-balling a three during summer league. I mean, I turned it off in disgust-- kind of pathetic. You clicked and shared. They aren’t pathetic, they know what people want/hate.
Literally none of those things, save like stage 16 of the Tour de France which no one cares about, even happened over the last 2 days. Like none of it.WNBA?
Wimbledon?
2024 Euros?
2024 Copa America?
Tour de France?
Olympic Trials?
Paris Olympics?
… but, sure, there’s nothing going on other than watching Bronny James pee down his leg*
*I feel bad for him because the few interviews I’ve seen with him he seems like a good kid.
I'm not sure I understand the criticism. ESPN covered all of those events, many in depth. That wasn't a shot at you... apologies if it came across that way. It was a shot at ESPN, which has myriad things it could be discussing besides NBA SL and Bronny James, imho. I get your point.
For the record, yesterday was the only day one or more of these events wasn't occurring. The two soccer championships were Sunday, and both were newsworthy for different reasons. Wimbledon men's final. Sunday was a big WNBA day... TdF is virtually every day, even though that may not float your boat. Hell... even the MLB draft has been going on for the last three days!
Tatum's magic force field failed to protect someone from the police and Inside the NBA would have done more.I don’t click Xitter links, especially Stephen A., but I can’t make heads or tails of those words in that order. Are those three separate stories? Four? More?
I’m such an idiot to not have parsed that on my ownTatum's magic force field failed to protect someone from the police and Inside the NBA would have done more.
Sometimes I think in a couple thousand years, archaeologists are going to be celebrating the discovery of the greatest translation aid since the Rosetta Stone: an archive of Urban Dictionary.I’m such an idiot to not have parsed that on my own
I wasn't aware of this 30-30, thanks for mentioning it and great to know it's good. I'll give this a watch! The 30 for 30 episode, American Son, about Michael Chang and his run to the 1989 French Open championship, is one of the best episodes I've seen. Highly recommended.
These are the only two moves today. ESPN is not going to have another huge round, but the fiscal year ends at the end of September so there could be a couple of other changes.
Apparently this occurred across Disney. A small round of layoffs so departments could meet fiscal year budget targets.Marchand adds that these were budgetary decisions and that more layoffs could happen in the fall.
