As well he should. He comes across like a self-entitled douche of the highest order with that quote. Won't go back to back? FUCK OFF you little bitch.Bard is getting deeeestroyeddddd
Seriously? You want him to get hot two nights in a row in game action then get ready for his start on Friday? What other starters do this? Felger and Mazz are way off base here. You either make him a starter or a reliever. No middle ground. As well he should. He comes across like a self-entitled douche of the highest order with that quote. Won't go back to back? Even F&M said it would be stupid to pitch him again.Seriously? You want him to get hot two nights in a row in game action then get ready for his start on Friday? What other starters do this? Felger and Mazz are way off base here. You either make him a starter or a reliever. No middle ground.
Well, I though he meant if they move back into the bullpen. Not that he would start on Friday for fucks sake.Seriously? How can he dictate terms? He's arbitration eligible for the next three years, so the Sox control him. What's he going to do sit out those three years? How do you think that's going to effect his career?Pick on him all you want. Bard is a legitimate commodity and he knows that. It might be upsetting to hear a 26 year old with seemlingly no leverage dictate terms to his employers, but this is the age we live in. He has more power than some might be willing to accept. He's not disposable like Shea Hillenbrand was. Also, he complied and probably will continue to do so.
No, but he can routinely say, "Sorry, I can't go today," to protect his arm, and put in only 50 appearances each season. Arb awards are largely dependent on service time, so he'll still collect and then depart. How can he dictate terms? He's arbitration eligible for the next three years, so the Sox control him. I totally disagree. I think he should be in the rotation until he proves he can't be a good starter. That was the plan for a reason (be it right or wrong), and personally I think he has shown a lot of promise so far. IMO, its on the rest of the bullpen to pitch to their abilities. This isn't a good bullpen, but there is no need for them to sport a collective 8? ERA.Well, I though he meant if they move back into the bullpen. Not that he would start on Friday for fucks sake.
The guy should be in the bullpen. Period.
Right, I agree he can't simply sit out the next three years. I think he feels he has enough leverage to bitch about it and I think he's probably right. Also, the Sox aren't going to cut their nose off to spite their face. The current pitching staff is a shitshow from top to bottom. They also have 30 mil + committed to guys who aren't even pitching for them currently. They're a mess, and they desperatley need Bard right now.How can he dictate terms? He's arbitration eligible for the next three years, so the Sox control him. He'll still collect, but with a damaged reputation. No, but he can routinely say, "Sorry, I can't go today," to protect his arm, and put in only 50 appearances each season. Arb awards are largely dependent on service time, so he'll still collect and then depart.
Reasonable people can disagree on this, but to me, confidence is worth more than what the stats tell me about how a pitcher like Bard is more valuable as a starter.I totally disagree. This group (players/management) need to get together on a plan and execute it. Switching from pen to rotation to pen to rotation didn't work out great for Joba, I would rather not see that happen to Bard.
edit: As for Bard's comments, the definitely rub me the wrong way. But my gut tells me his comments came off a little differently than he intended.
I think that's what Felger is getting at. That (A) Bard believes he has that leverage to begin with, and (B) that he in fact so asserts that leverage. Felger thinks that sucks. I tend to agree with him.Right, I agree he can't simply sit out the next three years. I think he feels he has enough leverage to bitch about it and I think he's probably right. This is the guy who rarely watches any of the games is commenting on. I wouldn't expect him to know anyone in the draft, but you can be sure that whatever happens, Mazz will rant about the Pats trading down or complaining about who they drafted.I cannot stand when they talk NFL draft.
Maz: "I WANT AN IMPACT PLAYER ON DEFENSE! USE THE PICKS!"
but then he can't name 10 defensive players in the draft.
Both Felger and Mazz are like carnival barkers. What little credibility they ever had (and it wasn't much) is long, long gone. A couple of wastes of human tissue who deserve no attention. Years ago Felger had some worth, but then he decided to turn into a cartoon character. "Squeaky" (Mazz) is lucky that he's ever been gainfully employed.^ Felger conveniently leaving out stuff because it doesn't make his point? Thats a big surprise! Felger was as wrong as anyone could be on Gronkowski and Hernandez, its the modern equivalent of when Ron Borges moaned and whined about the Pats picking Richard Seymour instead of David Terrell, and Seymour goes on to have a really good career while Terrell was an absolute nobody.
For YEARS Felger has bitched about the Pats not trading up and they did so twice tonight! With his big reason to complain about the Pats taken away, what will he do? Whine about how the Jets drafted a much better player? Claim they gave up too much in the trade? Sprinkle in a "You're absolutely right" and "the Pats SUCK" and it'll be just another day on the Felger & Mazz show!
The cap is crap so what would the CBA matter?Felger will go off tomorrow talking about how the Pats FINALLY saw the error of their ways. Of course, he will ignore the reality that under the new CBA the valuations of 1st-round picks have changed and BB is making moves accordingly.
He won't ignore it. In fact, he's acknowledged the rookie wage scale numerous times. He actually addressed it last night on Comcast. His argument is that the cost of picks in the mid-late 1st round has not changed nearly as dramatically as it did for top 10 picks.Felger will go off tomorrow talking about how the Pats FINALLY saw the error of their ways. What a disaster the last 12 years have been in New England. Their drafting strategy has been totally off base, held them back from winning anything."This draft class has a LIFETIME free pass from me. They finally did the right thing, trading up to go after guys they believe in. Even if the players are busts, the team's heart is in the right place." Mike Felger.
Of course as soon as he hangs up they bang the same drum that "Bard has no heart".Peter Gammons is completely owning Felger and Mazz on this Bard bullpen issue.
I missed it but I thought they were over this crap.Of course as soon as he hangs up they bang the same drum that "Bard has no heart".
More disturbingly, the Pats first pick was announced shortly after 10 PM EST.Mazz just said he went to bed before the Pats even picked, which also means 98.5 so called "baseball guy" also didn't watch the Red Sox (as that went longer).
How can someone who is paid to talk about sports not even watch the stuff he is paid to comment on.
Mazz just repeated that again a couple of minutes ago, as if he's proud of it.Mazz just said he went to bed before the Pats even picked, which also means 98.5 so called "baseball guy" also didn't watch the Red Sox (as that went longer).

The highlighter was right! That was definitely the first thing I thought when i saw the name pop up on the screenSo it turns out the Pats actually drafted Jake Bequette, "The Arkansas A-hole" that Felger "picked" this week. That should be fairly amusing on Monday.
Actually, that's not true. That chart hasn't been used by good organizations in over a decade. In fact most teams and experts (Peter King climbed on this bus this year) find that draft chart to be completely useless.Tony: "How many teams actually rely on that chart?" Um, Tony everybody does.
It was just announced that The Tangman and another "Green Teamer" will make a rare in-studio appearance this Wednesday. Not exactly my wish but close enough. Definitely must listen radio. You know with all the hate that goes on on this board for Mazz, it took me awhile to see the light. I, too, am sick of the constant ass-kissing (agreeing) with Felger. It's like the man believes if he says something counterintuitive to the other, he'll be fired. As it's been well-documented on here already he says the most asinine things and I LOVE it when Beetle calls him out on it! You can tell he's sick of his schtick as well with his rare mocking of him. Anyone know Tony's contract status? I'd campaign for a Tanguay re-hire as he and Felger seem to hate each other and THAT would make for entertaining radio!
Say it with me... "Yeaaaaaah."
With the new salary slotting its even more worthless. If BBis sitting there with that chart in 2012 I'd be shocked and disappointed.Actually, that's not true. * BTW, I assume you're talking about the draft chart that was created by the Dallas Cowboys in the early 90s that put values on draft positioning, right?
I would assume Belichick, along with many if not all other GMs, would use a different chart every year based on the talent dispersion of each draft. I could be way off, but with how much time and energy they spend on research, wouldn't it make sense to adjust the chart for the depth of every draft(including next year's).With the new salary slotting its even more worthless.
