I will say this: I wasn't planning to be back at Fenway, but if he gets within two on the last homestand I will be taking my 3 yr old to his first game

I think you are overestimating the draw personally, but I will take my chances.

He will ...

I hope he has the guts to work as hard as He can even though the conditioning will diminish ...

Ted hit his 500th in Cleveland in front of fewer than 10,000 fans.

Pap could be hitting his in the Trop in front of a smilier audience.

For a last place team the Sox have had great attendance. In the AL only New York and Anaheim have averaged more, and the Sox have had the highest road attendance in the league too. I wouldn't be shocked if it's hard to find a cheap ticket the next homestand if Ortiz is within 2.

If he doesn't do it in this home stand, I hope he plays sparingly or bunts a lot. I want him to do it at home and I'm sure he wants to as well. Maybe work on switch hitting for a week and a half.

Do you think teams offer under the table bonuses to players as incenstive to hit the milestones at home, so the team can benefit from the extra revenue and memorabilia? Can't sell limited edition 'Big Papi 500' cups of infield dirt if he does it at Tropicana Field.

Although Bowie Kuhn had to stop the Braves from sitting Aaron in 1974 because they wanted him to hit 715 at home. He played but didn''t homer until the Braves got back to Atlanta.

Yep.

We’re all day-to-day, that’s a lifelong condition, and that’s understood.

Yesterday, David Ortiz issued a two-sided reminder of just how day-to-day he is with the Red Sox.

In the first inning, he clouted home run No. 497 in his career, No. 200 at Fenway, No. 31 on the season and No. 5 in his last nine games — he is striking fear in the hearts of all pitching staffs once again.

And by the fifth inning, his day was over.

He had to be taken out of the game because he felt tightness in the calf. Nobody knows exactly how it happened, only that it was bad enough for the Red Sox to turn to Allen Craig to take over.

Anyone over the age of 40 understands that you can sprain an ankle just pulling up your socks some days.

Ortiz turns 40 in November.

He needs to pace himself. I am at Fenway on Tuesday. I saw his 2000th hit, would love to see his 500th dinger.

Not here
He's really running very poorly. I rather suspect he will get more than the usual number of days off, especially on artificial surfaces.

Tonight's shot for some reason felt especially reminiscent of Papi's pre-2007 heyday. Something in the easy, almost arrogant energy of the swing and the majestic trajectory to the CF bleachers. That was a true classic Large Father Bomb.

Bought Monster tickets for the first time a month ago for the final home game. Got that estimate wrong.

Ortiz is not going to coast.  This team has been playing very well since everyone gave up on them at the July trading deadline.  They've won eight out of the eleven series they've played since then.  They've taken series from the Mets and Blue Jays and went 2-2 with the Royals.  Baseball Propectus may have them at less than a 1 percent chance of making the postseason but I guarantee you that every guy in this clubhouse is thinking that they've got something special going and that it's not over yet.

The dude is hurting. It's painful to watch him run, and it's amazing that whatever is happening with his legs is not affecting his swing or power. I think he'll rest for a few days once hit hits 500, which I think will be at the Trop. And that sucks a million different ways. Part of me hopes he takes the entire TB series off and that he plays again at Camden, where there will be a decent number of Sox fans to go crazy for him. But it's pretty dangerous to mess with a hot streak like this by taking 4 days off.

I think he is more likely to rest when Hanley is back.  If he gets 500 before then, so much the better.

I'm starting to think Hanley is not going to be back this year. I think the shoulder is pretty well banged up and it's probably not worth it to rush him back in to see if he can handle 1B for a week with a bum wing.

With the Large Father, I worry about the achilles, which a tight calf can indicate is messed up. We do not need or want him to blow his achilles out trying to help the young guys have a great stretch run that will likely lead to nothing. Because that would be the end of Papi, and it'd be a major shame. Get to 500, and get yourself feeling as close to 100% as possible before you play again.  If that's Spring Training, so be it.

Picked up 3 tickets for Sat 26th , front row Loge (157) for less than face last night on stubhub. There were plenty of tickets less than face on it

Or at least change the question mark to a exclamation point.  Amazing accomplishment for Papi.

Yeah, seriously Edes? It's like the writers wanted him to be stuck just shy so they could write a few of those easy "it's a mental game" pieces about it. Ortiz wasn't stuck at all, he has been on a tear for several months. He was "stuck" on 499 for all of one at-bat.

Anyone have the radio call? I was watching NESN to hear Orsillo's.

Ortiz hitting 2 (so far) tonight reminds me of him breaking the Red Sox single season record. I was lucky enough to be at that game. He had multiple homers off of vintage Johan Santana, of all people. He reaches his milestones in style.

I'll go ahead and say it. The Greatest Red Sox player of our generation. Better hitter than Ramirez IMO. I hope he takes his 16 million and retires. Its been a pleasure watching him play.

Missed today, just realized he got to 500.

What an absolute beast of a player. He deserves to be in the HOF, a statue in front of Fenway, and his number retired ASAP.

Why on Earth do you want him to retire now? Multiple people say this and I do not understand it. He's having an excellent year. He could have a good year in 2016 too. There is some bizarre rush to see him stop playing that I don't really get.
