Didn't we start talking almost immediately about adding to the rosters sometime after the draft was over? We're all in the same boat I think.

Edit: this has been so much fun anyway I'd love to continue it. I've talked KFP's ear off.

I'm personally in favor of some kind of backup/depth draft that lasts a few rounds but I'd only want to do it if there's broad support.  Once everything calms down with the Marathon bombing and investigation (ie, next week), I'll start a new thread for discussion. I think that everybody should have a chance to weight in on whether they want to do this and, if so, how it should happen.

This is a great idea - perhaps you should start the thread/poll today or tomorrow so that by early next week, we're back on track?

As someone in Dallas and wanting to avoid V&N like the plague, how bad is the damage and disruption to every day life up there? I can't imagine what you all are going through.

The Denver Broncos select.... Robert Alford, CB

I feel like taking some chances on a couple rookies, so Alford is the pick for the Broncos.  Good size at 5-10, 188 lbs, good speed (4.39 40 time at the combine) out of Southeastern Louisiana.    Here's what NFL.com has to say:
...is one of the more physical cornerbacks in the country, and looked absolutely dominant at times during his senior year. His willingness to press, compete for balls downfield, and support the run –- as well as fair size, overall athleticism, and potential return ability will make him a highly sought-after player.
I'll gladly add that to my defense as a nickel DB, with the possibility to take over for DeAngelo Hall as a starter opposite Patrick Peterson should he impress us.

Can we agree on definition of broad support before the poll starts?

To clarify...i could see a scenario where 60% of folks approve this...but in my mind, given the statements above, that does not represent an "overwhelming majority". But to others it may.

Having a definition before polling seems reasonable. I'll start a discussion thread later today, leave that up for a few days, and then do a poll after people have exchanged views for a while.

Two-thirds majority approval?  That is what is required in the NFL for rule changes.  Would require 22 owners to vote in favor.
I was going to say the same thing. Two-thirds sounds about right.

Never thought I'd be the one to pop this cherry, but here we go..

The NFL is about all 3 phases of the games, and special teams cannot be ignored. And especially given the makeup of our defense, which puts an emphasis on rushing the passer, and forcing bad decisions, field position can be an incredibly important thing. So therefore, having a punter who can accurately pin the opposing offenses close to their own goal line as possible is pretty significant. That's why the Green Bay Packers are glad to welcome Andy Lee, P

Almost took a veteran, but I'd rather give a young guy a shot.

Hugh Thornton, RG.  Is he a high-round pick?  No.  But he's a big guy, someone who made the Senior Bowl, and has even played some LT.  He's strong and a former wrestler -- so you know he'll be able to grapple with the big defensive linemen.

I like Thornton.  Had a great week up to, and including, the Senior Bowl.  Probably a 3rd round pick at best, but a guy that some think can step in and start from Day 1 in the NFL.

Who's up and when? I realize it'll be a few days as most of us need sleep and to watch the Sox and B's tomorrow and process emotions. No rush. I miss this distraction and all of you.

If it's all the same I think we can take a weekend off. No need to skip anyone. Let's regroup Mondsy.

Yeah agreed. Start the clock back up Monday morning, and we'll be back on our way next week.
I think this is a good plan. Danoome will get a six
hour clock starting tomorrow at 8 EST and we'll go back to normal.

I also just sent him a PM.

Minor chart related issue, but my WR's name should be spelled Malcom Floyd.  The link now goes to some mid-1990s receiver.  Floyd may be old, but he's not that old.

Also Jerrell Freeman should have two R's in his first name.

Looking forward to finishing this draft!  Thanks for all the hard work to those who update the chart.

Another quick chart note, Scoops and Phragle are jerks and took Shea McClellin in round 22, which I didn't notice when I was planning my next few picks and find didn't work.  I was mad when Schatz took him in the other draft thinking it would put him on someones radar here, turns out he already was. :(

Are we back in swing now?

DanoooME was sent a PM last night and went on the clock at 8 AM, so yes...we're at the point where skipping might happen. If El Cab wants, El Cab is on the clock.

Alright, I guess I'm on the clock.

To get this thing going again, I'll add another young lineman to my defensive front. He only played in 8 games in his rookie season last year, mostly due to his team having good DL depth, but despite not being a huge run stuffer, graded out positively in this area and can provide some pressure in the pass game. The negative is his motor, which ran hot and cold in college. I haven't seen any reports indicating this has been an issue since he's become a professional and I'm hoping the lack of playing time in the second half of the season last year was the motivation he needs to come back in his sophomore season ready to play a more significant role.

With our next pick, the Jnai Dolphins complete their defense and select DT Devon Still

The Chargers select:

Jonathan Baldwin, WR

He has a boatload of talent but hasn't produced though he will now have a real life NFL starting QB throwing to him.  There are safer names left but I'd rather take the risk on someone who still has some pretty high upside.  He'll come in on 3 WR sets on the outside with Emmanuel Sanders moving to the slot.

Sorry, have been away all weekend and then some, just got back.

I feel the need for a pass catcher out of the backfield and a RB that's a little bigger than Morris.  Even though this guy has some mileage on him, he's got what I need.  Plus he throws better than Tebow in case I need a backup QB.  Of course, I still need a starting QB, but pay no attention to that fact.

The Varmint Cong select Ronnie Brown, RB2

Also, Scott Chandler is missing from my FB/TE/Flex slot on the spreadsheet.  Thanks!

Graded out pretty well in 2010 and 2011, but slipped in 2012.  Did flash some nice dance moves though.

We wanted to round out our WR corp, so we're going with...

Ryan Swope, WR

He's what we're looking for in a WR. He's quick enough to play in the slot, but physical enough to play on the outside. We like that versatility.

He runs crisp routes and has a reputation for working his way into good position when a QB is under pressure. He is good at making the first man miss, and has a quick initial burst (4.34 40 yard) to break off serious YAC. He also is one of those guys with the "High football IQ" reputation.

Some have compared him to Randall Cobb. Here's there numbers coming out of college:

Cobb's:
5’10”, 191 pounds
4.46 40-yard dash
4.34 20-yard shuttle
7.08 3-cone drill
33.5 vertical
16 reps with 225 pounds

Swope’s:
6’0”, 205 pounds
4.34 40-yard dash
4.25 20-yard shuttle
6.76 3-cone drill
37 vertical
16 reps with 225 pounds

Bigger, strong, faster, and quicker. He'll probably fall into the second or third round, but we think he's a little underrated. Obviously could end up being a dud, but we'd rather take a risk at a good player then take on a proven below average one.

The Bears select OLB Mathias Kiwanuka.

He's injury-prone, and just turned 30, but I like his versatility and pedigree.  I'll slot him in at my other OLB spot, but I'm going to have him put his hand in the dirt quite a bit.

Plus, I need at least one BC grad on my roster.

I like the Swope pick. Seems like a taller Welker, and that 3 cone time is pretty sexy. He's got short arms and small hands but if your QB is accurate and he's catching underneath stuff out of the slot it shouldn't matter much. Nice value here.

I'm around whenever I have the green light.

(Not overly excited about my next pick, just want to keep things moving and I'm leaving the office shortly and will be MIA).
