The NFL is in their bag this week. I know it happens every year, but in a non bye week to only have 3 games at 4pm is just criminal.

So you force feed 9 games at 1pm and then sprinkle on 3 games at 4pm? I assume this means that ratings for the 4pm games are always great no matter what but the ratings for the 1pm games are team dependent because people have things to do but will watch their team at 1pm no matter what. So try to grab the eyes at 1pm any way you can and then know the eyes will be grabbed at 4pm regardless of the fact that there are only 3 games happening.

So follow the money. Still, it's an absurd scheduling maneuver.

We'll see how well that plays out this week. The 4pm games are absolute trash this week. Normally you can count on a solid matchup, which is why the formula works. You watch your local team at 1, then you watch a more interesting game at 4.

I can’t tell if I’m getting out of touch or it’s a reflection of the product but…. Are there any compelling games this weekend? It used to be you could get hyped about 2-4 games each week. What’s the storylines this week? I can’t think of a single compelling one

Well the Rams and Bengals played an important game about a year and a half ago, but they both kind of aren't great this year. I'm with you.

It feels like rivalries are at an all time low… Manning/Brady type games are super rare. Maybe the league is passing me by but it’s become a bit more generic / next-man-up vs next-man-up to me

Good slate in college at least. I think Falcons/Lions could be entertaining. Two young and fun teams.

Giants have worse passcatcher and a worse O-line than the Patriots... and their defense is not that good. I have no idea how they made the playoffs last year..... AND WON!
Yeah, they won a ton of close games last year so I figured they’d be easy out. But Vikings are going to Viking.

Taking a shot at this:

Pats at Jets and Chargers at Vikings: will any of these teams have a season? Because the teams that lose this week could be done already.

Broncos at Dolphins: Russ' Last Stand?

Bills at Commanders and Eagles at Bucs: Are the 2-0 Bucs/Commanders for real? (If they don't get their doors blown off, maybe. If they win, then they may be.)

Rams at Bengals: Are the Rams for real, or will the Bengals have a season?

Falcons at Lions; Saints at Packers: NFC playoff spots in play down the line.

Did the schedule makers take Yom Kippur into consideration? Starts Sunday at sundown. Not changing the SNF game certainly but just throwing that out there.

It's the NFL, a league that values parity above all else. I'm sure most of these games will be within one score with 7-8 minutes left to play. It's that kind of league.

Vikings were frauds too last year. That first round game was basically the Fraud Bowl of the playoffs. Both teams were outscored in the regular season.

It’s an exceptionally bad slate. One team is favored by more than a touchdown in 4 of the 12 Sunday afternoon games, including 2 of the 3 late games. Chargers-Vikings is the only matchup between two playoff teams from last year.

You would think this would have an impact on ratings, but I realized a while ago that I don’t really understand what drives casual fans to watch some games (and some seasons) but not others.

Come on Mauf. Fantasy and gambling. That is what draws eyeballs. Fantasy football is absolutely huge now and gambling is coming on strong, too.

Maybe you wouldn't ever care about Indy versus Baltimore. But if you have Lamar Jackson and Michael Pittman on your team, you care a lot.

Yeah, but those are your heavy viewers. I assume it’s the casual viewer whose fickle habits cause NFL ratings to rise or fall from week to week or year to year. Those are the people whose motivations I don’t understand.

Bills ran a nice draw on 2nd and 11 and fooled the D-line, but Chase Young is so damn athletic he recovered and made the play anyway.

And Josh Allen has decided to start sliding, evidently.

Tennesse rush defense is spectacular. Pass defense is porous at best.

So Cleveland keeps running into the wall after passing down the field for an easy 40 yards.

And the Cleveland offense hands the ball to the other team on their own 18.

Again. That's 3 times in the last 65 game minutes.

Bills stuff Washington on 3rd and 4th down from 2 yards out

3rd down: run from shotgun
4th down: straight dropback from under center

sigh

Vikings fumble. Again.

edit: wait... they ruled that his forward progress was stopped. That's crazy.

Just to note what happened in Cleveland, Amani Cooper caught a long pass on the sideline and ran in for a TD. He was never even close to being out of bounds. He wasn't even close to close. Daylight on every step.

They called him OB.

You can't fuck something up that badly and then give no recourse for the team because an idiot ref working on a new glasses prescription inadvertently blows the whistle.

But of course Tennesse has a play on the sideline but it didn't involve a whistle, so they have the luxury of challenging.

A challenge they will lose, so no idea what Vrabel is doing.

Miami is giving it to the Broncos like Miami is the 2007 Patriots. Every play is 15 yards, at minimum. Every drive ends in a TD.

Probably a weird feeling when the best team in the conference is in your division and it isn’t the Patriots.

Feels weird to me, anyways.

Ok, so the refs stole 4 from the Browns but Vrabel handed 3 back by running a play with 15 seconds left and no TOs on the Browns 12.

Sack, half over. Idiocy. The Browns are more likely to give up an TD on offense as they are to score one. You take the points!

The Bills have been the best the last 3 years. The Pats haven't been great since 2018. So not that weird. What is weird is that it looks like Miami is playing against the defense of Deion's Colorado and not the Broncos.

I never realized that the Dolphins stadium has the Miami bench in the shade for 1PM games while the visiting bench is in direct sunlight. That's got to be one of the biggest home field advantages in sports.

don't you have to go for it 4th and goal at the 7? Settling for 3 down 25 seems a bit white flagish. Score the TD and go in 35-17 (or 18) at least would give a bit of hope.

it's just that I hate to see Payton and Wilson getting humbled again.... :)

AFC is wide open in a way it hasn’t been in a few years. The Dolphins and Ravens have been excellent; meanwhile, all four of last year’s division winners look worse.

And the Ravens are losing to the Colts today.

Miami is the best team. Buffalo and KC are next.
