Yes. But they traded for him, so he's on the team as a RHH corner outfielder. May have power. May suck ass. But he's in the mix, like it or not.Tyler O’Neil is under contract for one season

Not crazy about 4 years.
Agreed, unless is it significantly lowers AAVNot crazy about 4 years.
Makes Duran or Rafaela available as part of a pitching move?As many others have speculated, is this the precursor to a trade?
I think it’d have to be bigger in total dollars than Gurriel got so I’m guessing 4/$56-ish.4/28? I'll take it. 4/80? Get me off this ride.
That’s whet I was thinking. If they bring Paxton aboard as what is being reported then I’m guessing we have a pitcher added to the package. I was hoping we could add Yelich and his salary to a Burnes trade to make it not quite as steep a price, but this does not seem make that possible. But a package could be coming together none the less.Makes Duran or Rafaela available as part of a pitching move?
He does not even work for the Athletic as far as I can tell. No authors by that name on the athletic appWhat’s the deal with this guy? Writes for the Athletic but has a little over 2k followers. Only other “breaking news” on his feed was Zeke to the Pats, now he’s scooped everyone else?
I’m unfamiliar with him, so if he’s legit, someone please enlighten me.
MLBTR ranks him as the 12th best available free agent and predicted 4/80 at the start of the offseason.I think it’d have to be bigger in total dollars than Gurriel got so I’m guessing 4/$56-ish.
Yeah, a search on its website came up empty for the writerHe does not even work for the Athletic as far as I can tell. No authors by that name on the athletic app
So it’s BS until confirmed. He does not even work for the Athletic as far as I can tell. No authors by that name on the athletic app
And the profile pic looks suspiciously like Mac JonesSo it’s BS until confirmed.
The em dashes are confusing. I think he meant to say “are” and “than”I have no idea what Gammons is trying to say here … about 2005?
Gammons is the Oracle at Delphi in terms of clarity. The em dashes are confusing. I think he meant to say “are” and “than”
We're not "arguing." Tyler O'Neill is a RHH corner OF who has been a power hitter in the past when healthy. The Sox traded a pair of pitching prospects, Robertson and Santos for O'Neill. There was no salary dump, there was no ML player swap. This is a straight up acquisition.I’m not sure what we are arguing about. My point was that Teoscar Hernandez fills a role that at this point cannot be filled within the system. The top dogs are up the middle players who hit left handed.
Dalbec played a bunch of games in the OF for Worcester. Not sure if he’s acceptable out there but he is capable of also playing around the infield. He hit LHP enough to be part of a platoon. What’s the OF situation if they get Teoscar?
Teoscar
O’Neill
Duran
Yoshida
Refnsyder
Abreu
Rafaella
Obviously a couple of guys are either getting traded or sent to AAA. Refsnyder in particular already seemed redundant once we got O’Neill. And Yoshida can DH, but the thing I don’t like about that (compared to Turner) is that you now need someone else who can play 1B. Hmm. Many pieces in play.
Last year he was incredibly streaky. Had 4 months under .700 OPS and then mashed the other 2 months. Doesn’t look like he was too streaky in 2021 or 2022. This would be a meh move to me in isolation. If it’s part of something larger to get another SP, it would get more intriguing.Bad defense. Pretty good RH power. Ok. I've been on the "they need RH power" train for a while now. Not sure he's the best guy they can get but maybe he is. He's certainly a legit MLB regular starting caliber player. Last three seasons he's averaged just under 3.0 bWAR per year, which is fine.
With a decent chance Roman Anthony has a starting job by April/May 2025 (aiming for a ROY draft pick). What’s the OF situation if they get Teoscar?

Why? Gurriel is younger, and was better (2.1 vs 1.8 fWAR) in 23'.I think it’d have to be bigger in total dollars than Gurriel got so I’m guessing 4/$56-ish.
I’m guessing 4/80.Yeah it’s gotta be more like 4/90. He’s not jumping on 4/56 this early in the offseason.
Did Gammo make a Teoscar tweet? Or are you saying the Gammo Yoshida tweet gave you a contact high and the prospect of expensive Teoscar is turning your trip bad? That Gammo tweet with the Teoscar smoke has me a bit spooked, not gonna lie. Another bridge year is one thing, but potentially severely overpaying Teoscar?
Yeah, I’d expect Teoscar to be somewhere in the Gurriel range. Why? Gurriel is younger, and was better (2.1 vs 1.8 fWAR) in 23'.
Yeah, I'm with you that signing quality FAs when the team has the payroll space is much preferable than trading good young players. It would sting to see either Duran or Abreu go - I think both could give us several years of exciting play. Though I like the possibilty of Teoscar joining the team, offering some power from the right side, which they sorely need.I would have rather gone $30/M for Gray and $30M for Nola and keep the OF as is.
I mean this in a way that I’m assuming there’s a spending ceiling and that $30M for those two would have been the overpay that moved them to Boston
Sure, I can see wanting him more. I’d just expect the price to be in the same ballpark.Gurriel is only 1 year younger and hits for less power. Their overall value may be similar, but the Red Sox might think Teoscar's skills would be a better match for Fenway and the current needs than Gurriel.
Yeah, I wouldn't offer Hernandez a dime more than Gurriel received. They are incredibly similar players both offensively (career OPS .12 points apart) and defensively (both are bad for their careers but rated a bit above average last season), except Gurriel is younger and had a better season last year while Hernandez is a year older and is coming off 4 straight seasons of declining production with the bat. Even at equal money I'd be prefer Gurriel. Sox would probably be better served with a shorter, cheaper deal for Duvall.Sure, I can see wanting him more. I’d just expect the price to be in the same ballpark.
I’d much rather Soler than HernandezThoughts on adding Soler as a RH bat rather than Hernandez ... will be 32 - might come on a shorter deal?
He'd be cheaper but he can no longer play the field, and probably never should have even when he did. He'd be another guy whose natural position is DH on a team that seems to have cornered the market on players fitting that description.Thoughts on adding Soler as a RH bat rather than Hernandez ... will be 32 - might come on a shorter deal?
Philly might disagree…He'd be cheaper but he can no longer play the field, and probably never should have even when he did. He'd be another guy whose natural position is DH on a team that seems to have cornered the market on players fitting that description.
Yep. The Sox are just a slog to follow.I really, really hope this rumor is bogus. Spending Eduardo Rodriguez money on a declining Teoscar Hernandez - for 4 friggin years- is ridiculous. There is little reason to think that he'd even be an upgrade from Tyler O'Neil, who can at least play defense. If the team wants to waste a bunch of money on an uninspiring free agent, I'd rather they blow away the competition on Marcus Stroman or an injured Clayton Kershaw. If they are going to waste money it should least be in an area of need...
Take heart in that no one has followed up on it ... they didn't even recap it on MLBTR. Shows, once again, that the internet is filled with people claiming to be "insiders," who in fact aren't worth posting here. The guy who started this claimed to work for The Athletic; yet no evidence that he does could be found. It doesn't take long to figure out whether a source is legit, and it sure would save a lot of unnecessary angst if people did so before posting such "reports."I really, really hope this rumor is bogus.
Speier reported that the Sox had been “discussing potential contract parameters” with Teoscar as of Saturday night. Haven’t seen any credible reports of a 4 year deal but there’s a lot of smoke, and the silence could be due to the holiday.Take heart in that no one has followed up on it ... they didn't even recap it on MLBTR.
