So Miami is like, good. Trounced FSU today after the big Duke win. Shows maturity. Lots of teams let down after beating Duke.

Amazing how a coach who doesn't get too high after a big win can change things like that.  Haith never got that. Missouri may already regret hiring him, and if they don't, they will soon (even without the NCAA issues, he's a terrible coach).

Larranaga is a great coach, never got the respect he deserved at Bowling Green or George Mason until beating UConn in that Final Four run.  Fun fact on Miami: Julian Gamble has been there for 6 years.  The only people in the ACC with a longer tenure at their schools are Coach K, Leonard Hamilton, and Roy Williams.  No other ACC coach has been with his team as long as Gamble has been playing at Miami.

Surprised they didn't get the stretcher and medical help immediately. Seeing him pass out while being held by two walkons was depressing.

I'm surprised Len Elmore didn't go on the court and kick Hairston while he was down.  Man he hates Carolina, even for a Maryland guy the hate is strong.

Any news on Hairston? At the game and didn't get a good look at what happened other than he looked like a mess when they were trying to get him off the court. Took forever to get some legitimate help for him.

Hairston is now sitting and walking around a bit, showing some improvement after the initial accidental elbow to the head.

P.J. Hairston has a concussion and will not return to the game.

Thanks. Just noticed he's back on the end of the bench with a towel over his head. Doesn't look too steady still - surprised they have him out here at all.

Marcus Paige had an excellent performance in UNC's game this afternoon.  19 big points and we needed every one of them, especially with P.J. not able to go.

Up 36-12 now.

It's the anti-Miami game

State's "greatest team ever!!!!" is once again looking up at Duke and UNC in the standings.  Things never change.

I know this is a bit crazy, since Miami is the best team in the league, undefeated in league play and we are on the road BUT I think Carolina wins tomorrow.

It is very difficult to go undefeated in ACC play. A down game will come and I am hoping it is tomorrow combined with lights out shooting from Hairston and Bullock. Florida State obviously is not as good as advertised but we did beat them on the road so there is some precedent for a solid road win.

I like what I've seen from this team of late and am cautiously optimistic.

Miami is really really fucking good too.  I don't want to take anything away from them.  It's probably up to Duke at home to keep them from running the table in the league.

Oh Christ, no. I'm going to be watching from a Durham bar with a few Carolina fans so I expect to be shit on pretty nicely tonight.

As a Carolina alum, I have been dreading tonight, but one advantage of having a bad team this year is there are zero expectations. If we happen to pull out a win, Chapel Hill will go crazy, but if we lose, we can just blame it on a rebuilding year.

What's a rebuilding year?

Duke doesn't have those is the point. And, for the most part, it's true. Coach K gets more out of his teams than Williams does. I don't think that's even in question anymore.

Going to Motorco. Never been.

They were 22-11 and finished 6th in the ACC in 06-07.  Maybe that "rebuilding year" isn't going to the NIT like UNC did or probably will do this year, but they definitely had one and in recent memory.

Yep.

The best version of this team is

Jackson Simmons
McAdoo
Bullock
Hairston
Page

with Brice Johnson, Dex, JP, McDonald and Hubert coming off the bench in that order.

Edit - and that 'best version' doesn't beat Duke tonight or probably even at home but we at least make the tournament.

if walkon Jackson Simmons is one of your starters, you've got big problems.  And I say that as a Jackson Simmons fan.

That's very true. And obviously Brice Johnson has a hell of a lot more talent than Jackson Simmons and Joel James has a hell of a lot more potential than Jackson Simmons. But Jackson Simmons sets screens and rebounds the basketball.

I'm not so down on UNC-CH's chances here.  They play this game four times, I think UNC-CH wins one -- the one in which Duke's shooting goes cold and Plumlee gets in foul trouble.

This is true, but they were also 13-1 at one point and #5 in the country and 18-3 and #8 in the country before completely collapsing in February.

By comparison UNC hasn't been ranked since week 7 when they were #23 with an 8-2 record, and they haven't been in the top 10 since week 3 at 3-0.

You guys would have to miss every 3 you took and Plumlee would have to get locked out of the stadium for Carolina to have a chance.  There isn't anybody on Carolina's roster who can even slow Plumlee, especially with Joel James out (at least he has a big body) and McAdoo's back all messed up.

I wish Jackson Simmons didn't look like he needs a GPS on defense.

Drocca is right that Jackson does a lot of the "little things" on the offensive end that help and that I wish the guys with more talent did (he's the best screen-setter on the team by a country mile) but he's not big enough or athletic enough to play regularly in the frontcourt of an ACC team.  How's he going to defend Richard Howell, Kenny Kadji, Plumlee, Alex Len, etc?  He can't.

Maybe not anymore, Plumlee with 3 now.  This is not the team everyone thinks it is without Kelly.

Without Kelly, ie what this team is now, Duke would have lost those big early season games and been somewhere around #15 or so, and then given their two losses since, would have moved between 10-20 in the meantime.  However, they moved up the polls when they got those early wins (a team that they are not today), and then have stayed there as the other top 5 teams have traded losses.  They're not really #2, by any means.  They went from 4 scorers to 3, two of which are shooters and 1 is now the only big man left -- he gets in foul trouble like now and it's all over.

Duke hopes to get Kelly back by the ACC tournament, which only gives him a couple games plus the opening game or two of the NCAA to get back into the rotation.  He won't be in shape by any means, physically or basketball shape.  We'll see.

Everything this team sucks at Roy never does anything about.  I'm ready for him to retire and somebody younger and more concerned about coaching defense and adjusting to his players instead of needing a perfect storm of talent to be good to take over.
