#DFG: Canceling the Noise

Is there any level of suspension that you would advise Tom to accept?

I hope Rachel Nichols has back up transportation for the next commish presser.  I suspect she'll have some "car trouble" that day.

"I'm available to the media almost every day of my job professionally." Goodell has rejected every interview request I've made since 2012.

Well, he's available to his chosen media lackeys for suspiciously timed leaks.

ESPN panelist (Jamelle Holieway?  not sure):  You don't need a special investigator to tell you it's not ok to hit women.

I would ask Goodell why don't the officials measure the footballs with a tape before the game. Well, the RULESSSS have very clear specifications about the maximum and minimum length and circumference of the footbal, and rules are rules, right?

She's had the better of him for at least a couple of years. What's great is that he has found no way to address her without coming off as a jerk

You know the rules, you want time with the Rog, you need to provide some Skyline Chili to grease the skids.

Did he really say it was more important how bad his year was?
"It's been a tough year on me personally," he said. "We obviously as an organization have gone through adversity, but more importantly it's been adversity for me. We take that seriously. It's an opportunity to get better."

Pollian -- this is a societal issue, because a portion of the player come from bad environments, and that's the real issue.

I'm embarrassed to be an old white man, because our fucking spokespeople really suck.

Polian is roasting Rog over his talking about extra points and streaming.

But "I would never question his sincerity".

Hannah is pissed that he refers to "these issues" instead of being afraid to utter the words "sexual assault" or "domestic violence".

Turned over to ESPN after NFL Network went to commercial.  They seem to be arguing over not whether or not Goodell sucks, but which of all the reasons he sucks is the reason he sucks the most.

Herm -- do we want to be talking about domestic violence on the Friday before the game?

Hannah and Schefter -- never a bad time to talk about it.

Herm says he "agrees," but then says, "but after the game".

I seriously had to check to see if Polian had a stroke recently, I don't remember his speech being so slow and tough to hear.

Well, we can spend 10 days before "the game" talking wild conspiracy about slightly deflated footballs, but god forbid we discuss petty issues like domestic violence and take the light off the main event.

For those interested.  Here is the Nichols question.
http://www.sportsgrid.com/nfl/rachel-nichols-nails-goodell-on-conflict-of-interest-question/

Nichols:

“Roger, you guys have faced a lot of problems over this past year that have a really wide range, but a lot of the issues have in common the conflict of interest. When you do something like hire an outside investigator like Ted Wells into the Patriots investigation, you’re still paying him and Robert Kraft who owns the Patriots is still paying you. So even when you do everything right in one of those situations, it opens you guys up to a credibility gap with some of the public and even with some of your most high-profile players. What steps can you guys take in the future to mitigate some of those conflict of interest issues?”
Goodell:

“Well, Rachel, I don’t agree with you in a lot of the assumptions you make in your question. i think we have had people that have had uncompromising integrity. robert mueller is an example. i think you asked me the same question last fall about a conflict of interest. their integrity is impeccable. ted wells’ integrity is impeccable. these are professional that’s bring in outside expertise, outside perspective. and their conclusions are drawn only by the evidence and only by the attempt to try to identify that truth. so i think we have done an excellent job of bringing outside consultants in. somebody has to pay them, rachel. so unless you’re volunteering, which i don’t think you are, we will do that. but we have the responsibility to protect the integrity of the league, whether we have an owner that’s being investigated or whether we have a commissioner that’s being investigated, they’re done at the highest level of integrity and quality.”

Text doesn't do justice.  You need to watch the clip to get the full flavor of his response.

Finally she hit the leak issue.

If I'm a random owner the leak issue is my biggest problem.  As a team owner I want ieague investigations and discipline issues and cheating allegations to all be handled in a black box so the PR hit from anything is minimal, but now because Kensil (or whoever) has a hard-on for the Pats and doesn't understand the ideal gas law and feels empowered to leak away you've got a PR disaster and if the Pats millions of people will idiotically think it's a tainted trophy no matter what the truth is.

Since he went all mealy-mouthed on Deflategate -- except for saying the NFL isn't even sure there was a violation -- the trending story out of this could be how badly Goodell conducted himself.

Mass media wants the freshest blood available. A commissioner losing his job is higher up the food chain

Okay, yeah, this sucks, but a big reason why is BECAUSE THE STUPID FUCKING MEDIA HAS BEEN HARPING ON THIS BALL PRESSURE FOR A WEEK AND A HALF!!

By my count London reporters got 2 questions and Boston (or more generally New England) reporters got only 1?

Right, this is exactly the issue, but nobody else talking about it has seemed to pick that up.

Someone should have asked him if the leaks coming from the league office have damaged the value of the Pats franchise, and how does that correspond with his duty to protect the shield.

The NFL is like a microcosm of everything that's wrong with our political system- a bunch of very wealthy people install leaders with zero integrity who will protect their interest at the expense of everyone else.

People don't care about the leaks that much because neither fans nor sports reporters are generally opposed to NFL employees leaking information. Even here, where leak are generally just slamming my beloved Pats, I'm curious as heck and want more leaks  about what's going on and frankly just wish somebody was leaking the Pats' viewpoint a little more.
