I don't know if Thomas would have helped as much as people are thinking, honestly. Manning is at his best when he gets rid of the ball quickly. If he's not, he's not going to run around in the pocket until someone gets open; he's probably just going to throw it away or make a dump-off throw. That's just how he plays.

Yes, the rush was getting to him early in the year, but they don't need an all-world OL for Manning's offense to function, they just need a non-putrid one. I think they would have improved more by adding another WR (certainly possible there was no such player).

Moot now, I suppose.

I'm surprised the league hasn't figured out a way to force more activity on deadline day. It's pretty much the only thing that the other three major leagues have over the NFL in the "exploit for eyeballs" department.

Hard salary cap to blame

I doubt Dorito Dink and the guy manning the batteries for the ref headsets have much inside info

And non-guaranteed contracts. You have a decent chance of just adding a guy who's cut; conversely, there's less incentive to unload a big deal to a team with space...you can usually just cut them.

I like the NFL trade deadline and the fact that few deals are made. I prefer to see teams finish the war with the players they started it with, for the most part. It's cool that some few deals do happen, and can help teams get better, but I like that it's more of a tweak than a MLB-esque bring in a rental ace to pitch you through to the WS even though he played for someone else for most of the season.

I'm with you on this. Trading a mid-round pick for a decent LT would have made sense, like a fourth or fifth for Jermon Bushrod of the Bears or something. Trading a first for Joe Thomas and having to clear a bunch of salary for him seems like overkill and a poor use of resources.

Tactical false leak by the Patriots to fake others into panicked overpaying on a trade?

What was the name of that other 'reporter' who insisted she had an inside source on the Pats signing John Abraham---Erika Leigh, I think?

From @Jeff_Legwold, #Broncos backed out of Joe Thomas deal when #Browns asked for 1st, 2nd AND 3rd round draft picks http://bit.ly/1iBynKy

Here
Denver is built for the long run, so I kind of wish they had pulled the trigger and given up future assets. I don't think Denver would have won this year with him, because there's little he can do to stop Manning from throwing ducks as the weather gets worse.

Was pressure on the QB a problem for Denver? I know manning has sucked. But I thought he was still getting the ball out quickly. Just getting it out quickly and shitty. Or are people concerned about this because if could make the Denver running game stronger?

Maybe improved pass-protection from Joe Thomas wouldn't have prevented Peyton from throwing Chicken Parm heroes (though to my mind, it wouldn't hurt), but it's also true that Thomas would've been an asset for their underperforming run game.

I'm glad he's not a Bronco.

I'm not sure they can win this year but I wouldn't say they're built for the long run either.  Four of their starting front 7 players are UFAs after this year (Miller, Wolfe, Jackson, Trevathan) and the other three are UFAs after 2016 (Marshall, Ware, Williams although his option may get picked up).  They'll free up a fuckton of cap space by parting with Peyton after this year but they have a lot of guys who are about to get expensive very quickly so its not like they're going to have a lot of roster flexibility if they want to keep the defense together.  The returns on their last three drafts have been pretty mediocre in aggregate and who knows what the QB situation looks like post-Peyton.

Even with the noodle arm, my guess is that the Broncos have a much better chance of winning a Super Bowl this year than they will in any of the following 2-3 years.
