From Boston.com

The latest round in the apparently never-ending battle for sports-radio supremacy in the Boston market belongs to 98.5 The Sports Hub, which finished second among men 25-54 in the quarterly Arbitron ratings for the summer.
But WEEI wasn't far behind, finishing tied for third despite a dismal season for the Red Sox season, for whom it is the flagship station.

The Sports Hub earned a 6.8 share in the summer quarterly, which covers the period from June 21-Sept. 12, trailing classic rock station WZLX (also owned by CBS Radio), which was tops with an 8.3.

WEEI, which finished second in the spring book, two spots ahead of The Sports Hub, earned a 6.4 share this time around.

The Sports Hub, the flagship for Patriots broadcasts, benefited from the anticipation and start of the football season, surging in September with a 7.8 share to WEEI's 5.8 in the month.

Details about specific day parts are still filtering in, but here is what we know:

-- The Sports Hub's morning drive program "Toucher and Rich'' was first in the 6 a.m-10 a.m. window with an 8.6. The "Dennis and Callahan" program on WEEI (93.7) was tied for third at 7.2.

-- Despite the Red Sox' struggles, WEEI was first in the evenings (8.9), while 98.5 The Sports Hub was fifth (5.6) in that 7 p.m.-midnight window. The "Planet Mikey'' program airs on WEEI when the Red Sox aren't playing, while Damon Amendolara is The Sports Hub's evening host.

-- The Sports Hub's "Felger and Massarotti" program in afternoon drive finished first, while its midday program, "Gresh and Zolak," was second.

-- WEEI's three daytime programs -- D&C, midday's "Mut and Merloni," and "The Big Show with Glenn Ordway and Michael Holley" in afternoon drive -- all finished in third or tied for third.

I think it's telling that the threads for D&C and Mut and Merloni have dropped off the first page. WEEI has really been marginalized. I tuned in before lunch and they were talking about how great the Triple Crown is, a caller suggested RBI and batting average weren't the best measures for a player, and Merloni tells him to get away from the computer and watch the games or something along those lines. It seems like WEEI is going to continue to sit back with the same game plan that hasn't been working so well for them.

I heard a bit of that too, MHer. Merloni completely lost it when someone brought up stats other than HR, BA and RBI. "Are you going to tell me that batting average doesn't mean anything anymore? RBIs don't mean anything anymore? Home runs don't mean anything anymore?"

And while I agree with Merloni about Cabrera being the MVP, he sounded sorta dumb.

Just turned on T&R, and Rich said something about having bloggers on the show to spar with Shaughnessy.

I would love to catch it on the archives if it happened today. Did anybody listen live?

I heard the last couple minutes of that. They had a guy from Barstool (maybe El Presidente), someone from a Celtic's blog, Adolpho, and at least one guy who is "just a blogger", not a name from a wellknown site.

Shank said he had no problem with the bloggers who everyone knows (all but the "just a blogger" guy), as they aren't taking potshots from the basement. A texter responded that he wished Patrick Chung could backpedal as well as CHB.

That is very true. I heard him arguing with a guy yesterday about the home record of Seattle and why Qwest Field is a secret weapon for them. A guy called up and disputed the claim because the Seahawks haven't been very good since their Super Bowl run. Lou said it's really good, the caller said what was it, Lou said he didn't know but it was really good, the guy said ok, well what was it. Lou said he didn't know and he doesn't have time to look up things like that. Merloni was getting really pissed and was saying "They're .500 (overall), but they have a good record at home." and the caller was getting confused because he kept thinking that Merloni was saying that the Seahawks were .500 at home.

God, it was horrible.

BTW I had the 20 seconds and Google, their record is 53-29 (.646) in the regular season and 5-1 in the post season.

I came into work early today, and got the 6:20-7:00 version of the "show."

I put that in quotes because the show seems to be a victim of its own success. I got in the car, there was 3 minutes about the Pats secondary, 3 minutes about the Farrell thing and the interview process being another sham, and then - Boomer Esiason (which btw fuck you CBS radio because I hate these things) pre-recorded thing, 2 minutes of commercials, Wallach sports break, 5(!!) minutes of commercials, traffic, email thing for two emails (maybe 3 minutes of actual radio), then 3 minutes of commercials, then another break from Wallach and the news.

What the fuck.

Yea, my commute usually takes me from about 5:50- 6:00 to 6:35-6:45 and I can't really listen to it anymore. to make matters worse, they start off with the Flash, then news update and traffic and don't even begin the show until 6:07

I've experienced the same thing. And half the time Fred is on a transparent rant contrived to increase ratings.

Everytime I have listened in the 6-6:30 time period, its like they are an NBA team on the 2nd night of a back to back struggling to find energy. Then it seems once 7 rolls around they start to hit their stride.

I was just coming to post the same thing. 6-6:40 or so they're pretty tired and going through the motions. I really don't blame them if they're up to 11-12 watching various games, have to get up at 4:30 and get right on the air. At least they watch some games unlike Mazz who's gotta be up by noon.

That being said, the CBS Sports Minute and increased commercials definitely seem to have taken over at times, nevermind the WBZ news and traffic updates.

Of course. i used to take the train and get to work at 7, so I'd only hear the 1st hour. Unless you listen to the rest of the show, the 1st hour sucks. Sometimes you catch Fred in a bad mood and it's funny, but there's a reason anything good is at 7:20, 8:20 and replayed at 9:20.

Today's interview with Arrington was really awkward, but I give them credit for at least addressing it. Asking them about the awful secondary, him being benched etc. Thought they were respectful about it, but didn't pull the Boston Media and just dance around it.

Bizarro world...Toucher and Rich entertaining while talking politics two days in a row, and Dennis and Callahan barred from talking politics and instead talking baseball. Dennis was going off on twitter last night about the ban, retweeting his followers complaining that they don't talk politics and slamming Jason Wolfe.

I flipped on NESN for a few seconds earlier, and saw D&C talking about Kevin Youkilis. Yes, Kevin Youkilis, the day after a presidential election.

It's killing them inside, and it's beautiful. Sweet karma.

Yes. This is pretty awesome. If they were clever, they would disguise the political talk as sports talk. But they're not, so too bad.

What I heard certainly sounded like they were trying to disguise political talk as sports talk. Their primary topic in the first hour was "biggest stomach punch loss"...they brought up the 2003 ALCS, the Tyree catch, etc. A ridiculously random topic from a sports perspective. But considering their boy Scott Brown lost his Senate seat and Obama winning four more years...I can see that they feel like they got punched in the stomach by the results. Hence the parallel. It was really really bad radio though, especially since it didn't sound like the fill-in flash boy was in on the joke.

Wait why can't D&C discuss politics? D&C has been more political than sports for years why change it now?

The decision was made by Jeff Brown, the VP/Market Manager for Entercom Boston. Brought in from Portland, Oregon in June 2011. He's Wolfe's boss.

IMO, good call by Mr. Brown. The politics nonsense was what made me finally give up on D&C when they were wallowing in Obama misery four years ago. At this point, I wouldn't take a leak on D&C if they were on fire, but I might not have given 98.5 a shot when they debuted if D&C wasn't so unlistenable due to their miserable brand of political talk. Of course, the listeners who continued to tune in probably miss it. :D

It's weird they told them not to talk any politics on twitter. I understand on the radio but restricting their twitter accounts is kinda crazy.

Looking at his feed from last night, Callahan is bat shit insane.

I have gone back to listening to them now that they talk sports -- they are pretty darn good at it. I just wish I didn't know how off the charts they are politically. Would Hitler have been a good interviewer? Maybe so.

Nice of John Dennis to throw Jason Wolfe under the bus repeatedly on Twitter last night then. They both just seem like such great guys.

I really wish Wallach would stop referring to himself as a "stat nerd." His knowledge of advanced metrics rivals that of Cafardo.
This is the thing that kills me and makes me shut the radio off at times when they discuss baseball (including this morning). I don't expect everyone on the planet to use WAR, wOBA, UZR etc., but for Wallach to be "dorky stat guy" and be so ignorant to advanced stats makes for an absolutely brutal listen. If he's not going to add anything to the in depth sports discussion, then he's useless on the show because he adds nothing anywhere else.

I don't like Wallach, but discussing advanced statistics makes for extremely boring radio that will only excite a very very very minuscule subset of their listeners. Compared to Fred and Rich and their average listener he is a stat nerd and knowing anything about WAR, UZR doesn't help him or the show.

That's a fair point yeah. I mean I don't think they should spend a ton of time on baseball advanced metrics or anything, but I just think their baseball talk would be a lot more enjoyable if the supposed sports expert on the show would at least acknowledge something other than RBIs and batting average with 2 outs and RISP. His condescending tone doesn't exactly help things either.

EDIT: I also don't think that compared to Fred, Wallach has any more knowledge of anything sports related. Compared to Rich, yeah of course but that's not really Rich's thing. I don't see any difference in the sports knowledge between Wallach and Fred.

Great interview with Jeremy Roenick this morning. Even when I didn't watch hockey I couldn't stand him, especially when he told fans that they could kiss the player's asses if they didn't like the strike but he came off really well with T&R.

Have to give them credit for trying to get something out of the Kyle Arrington segment. This week it was movies. A painful interview otherwise, by their own admission.

How was it? I can't believe I missed it especially after hearing the YAHOOS stuff from earlier this year.
The interview made T&R seem kind of small. They should be above trying to bait "sports talk Matt" into a shouting match.

Granted, the guy is a clown, but still, didn't reflect well on T&R. Fred was a huge dick.

Glad I didn't catch it then, Fred is at his worst when he gets petty and feels slighted. Look no further than how pissed he got when Felger didn't shave his head all the way during the "Cuts for a Cause", he sounded legitimately butthurt because they are viewed as clowns and not taken seriously.

I love listening to these guys, but Fred wants it both ways. He doesn't want to be considered a clown but then Rich goes out there and acts like one during the Celtics game. I thought it was funny but they aren't going to be taken seriously when they pull stunts like that.

Earlier there was an awkward moment when Fred was about to go off on the diving show and how dumb it was and he stopped and asked why rich was giving him the "cut" signal. It was obvious that Fred was going to a place that Rich didn't want to go.

I like how TSH in general has little patience for callers that are idiots, including "celebrities" that act like they're doing you a favor by appearing on your show. Contrast that to EEI that doesn't hang up on idiots who call in and say, "Seattle needs relievers, right? How about we trade Devern Hansack, Kyle Snyder, and Kason Gabbard for Felix Hernandez?".

The worst was when someone was interviewing Dick Vermeil on radio row during one of the Superbowls. He wouldn't stop talking about his stupid wine business when asked football questions and it was almost as painful as Keith Foulke level interview hell. Unfortunately, it's hard to hang up on someone who is sitting right next to you. :D
