I must have heard the PBP guy yell "Contact! And NO CALL!!" about a dozen times in the second half alone.
yea that was incredibly annoying, seeing as the refs called a million fouls on umass anyways

No mention of the apparent rule change that allows Argentinian players to kick the ball.

Wow, what a three by Loe for SLU, after VCU nearly forced the turnover. A 7-0 run for the Billikens now since VCU's 9-0 run that tied it.

Or the rule that allows any defender to kick Putney in the face.

Serious question: Which came first: Dr. Seuss's grinch, or the SLU Billiken mascot? Because one entity really should have sued the other for infringement. Aside from color, they're nearly identical.

SLU hangs on. Chaka's going to have his kids frothing at the mouth when they arrive at Mullins Friday night.

Really glad this team was able to go out and get the win today. Free throw shooting aside, this is the best game they've played in 2 months. Definitely the best road win of the year. Friday night is going to be awesome.

Well, I think UMass won this game with strong defense under the hoop. They packed it in down low, established their physicality early, and completely neutralized our low post offense. Kellogg deserves a lot of credit for a strong game plan and the Putney/Carter/Lalanne trio deserves a lot of credit for using their length and strength to push Larsen around and turn him into a midrange jump shooter. The offense didn't really know how to respond to that and looked stagnant for much of the game. The only way we could've overcome it was by hitting our shots from outside or attacking the hoop from the perimeter and opening things up--the former really comes and goes from game to game for us, and while Garino did his best in the latter category, we just didn't have the personnel to do it effectively with Savage in street clothes and McDonald banged up.

Not trying to make too many excuses, but I will say this: I think you guys lucked out big time in playing us three days after our trip to VCU--that game wore us out. As I said yesterday, our bench is really, really thin right now (understatement of the century--three fucking points the whole game from the bench--and we looked completely gassed out there. I really hope we meet again in Brooklyn, where I think a healthy Savage could make the difference--he's the best slasher on the team and we need both his aggressiveness and his minutes. Of course having said that, I'm well aware that Chaz was banged up today too, and I'm pretty nervous about the possibility of seeing him explode for 20 points in the A-10 semifinals.

After a huge road win for UMass on Saturday their tournament profile is currently :
Record 20-5, 7-4 Conference, RPI: 18, SOS: 54, 4-2 vs RPI Top 50, 12-4 vs RPI top 100, KenPom: 44, Sagarin: 38, additionally they only have 1 bad loss (vs. the RPI 150+).

Lunardi currently has them as an 8 seed, while Jerry Palm has them as a 7 seed. Those projections feel about right, however UMass's remaining schedule would allow them with a strong finish to move up into the 5-6 seed range.

8/9 seed is tough because you play the #1 seed in the second round (if you make it that far)

I realize this is a long shot (and not necessarily the right place), but if anyone has a line on a pair of tickets for this coming Friday's game vs. VCU, please send me a message.  Thank you!

Hopefully BC's big win at Syracuse slightly helps UMass' RPI.  A win against a bad team is better than a win against a pathetic team.

I don't think you quite understand how RPI works. While BC's win at Syracuse may seem like a "big win," it's just the same as any other road win for RPI purposes (putting aside the SOS bump that happens win or lose). That is, If BC had lost to Syracuse but beaten Georgia Tech the other day, it (and UMass) would have the exact same RPI as it does now.

Last night's results make tomorrow night's game a little more important, as SLU, St. Joe's, Dayton & SBU all won. Richmond (through their loss to GW on Tuesday) has been the only upper-division school to take a step back in the standings this week, and without Cedrick Lindsay they're toast anyway.

I get they want to generate offense with someone else other than Chaz, but Putney's ball handling leaves something to be desired. Back and forth game so far.

Announcers are terrible. Lifeless is an understatement. I suppose a rainy, cold night Amherst doesn't help.

Late to the broadcast. Sounds like John Saunders on play by play. No idea who the commentator is, but he/she sounds like they're about 14.

These uniforms are hideous. Which is appropriate, since it mirrors their play thus far -- especially on offense. Lead or no lead, they're taking a shitload of shitty shots, and missing a shitload of easy ones.

Wait... did he call the commentator Kara? As in ex-UConn women's center Kara Wolters?

Horrible choice for this game.

UMass now a lovely 8 for 25 from the floor, including 0/3 from deep. Beyond putrid.

EDIT - Make that 8/27, as they miss a lay-in and the follow after the O-Reb.

Dyson clanks a deep three off a fast break with only 1 rebounder underneath. What the fuck are these dipshits thinking? What the fuck has Kellogg been doing with these nitwits the past three days? Seriously, how the flying fuck are they not better prepared and executing a more refined game plan than this run&gun playground crap?

Awesome. Out of a UMass TO the Rams drain a three. Up 9 now.

Putney has joined the 2-foul club. UMass has missed 15 of their last 17 shots. Holy fuck.

Hey, they finally hit a shot AND beat the VCU trap. The shot was a layup, but I'll take whatever I can get at this point.

Rams score immediately at the other end. Awful.

He should lose his fucking JOB at halftime. I can't believe how horribly these morons are playing. It's like they've spent the week playing poker and sleeping it off.

Its the same shit every possession, running out of control up the court and just throwing the ball at the hoop. Everything about this game sucks.

And just like that, they explode. How does a team shooting 12 of 34 (0/5 on threes) cut the lead to 2 with 2:29 left?

They finish the half shooting 33% including 0/7 on threes. Can't believe they're only down 5.

Some of the worst basketball I've seen them play this year.

Putney limping badly. Went down hard AND awkward on a block attempt down low. For a team completely devoid of bench depth AND discipline in the post, this would be a fatal blow to their season.

Putney back in. A collective sigh is exhaled by thousands.

EDIT - And now he makes the steal and the breakaway slam with authority. Yeah, he's fine.

VCU gets 3 straight offensive boards before Esho grabs their 4th miss on that possession. UMass finally takes the lead at the other end.

Now out-shooting VCU by a bucket from the floor (.415 to .404). Still haven't hit a three. Stat sheet shows 0/7, but they don't seem to have counted Chaz's final heave before the half, so I've got them at 0/8. Good news: Aside from Carter (3/6 including the 2 bricks earlier) they're shooting well from the line (.706, 12/17).

That was on 13/39 shooting. Since then, they're 14 for 24 (58%). Amazing what smart shot selection can do for one's fortunes.

They called a UMass foul down low but ESPN cut to commercial before telling us who incurred it. Chaz, Cady & Gordon each have 3, so this could be a monumental call with 4:00 left.

In other news, John Saunders is a super nice guy, but he has no business whatsoever doing college basketball play by play. He's consistently behind the action, resorting to barking out someone's last name every 5 seconds or so while otherwise remaining silent.

Horrible lay-up miss by Gordon the other way.

DAVIS! WIth the fallaway! Not exactly a high-percentage shot, but I'll take it.

And a HUGE stop on the other end.
