Is the headline at least based on something? Some soundbite they're willfully misrepresenting from Wright, anything?
Doubt it. Probably just a "played the game the right way" quote. Tried to find story online and all I found was this new picture of Joba. He looks like Fat Liev Schreiber now.JohntheBaptist said:Is the headline at least based on something? Some soundbite they're willfully misrepresenting from Wright, anything?

Nothing like what the headline suggests.

Just so there'd be a hint of subtext that he was a molester. Not that anyone noticed.

Including this one?

I downloaded that thing years ago, when it was first mentioned here, but all it did for me was put a "2" at the top of the page---until last week, when it became difficult, if not impossible (I stopped waiting) to load the NYT baseball section. So I got rid of it.Ramon AC said:

Pete Williams said:.328 OPS in ST right now. He looks terrible. I don't think he makes it through the entire season. He certainly doesn't make it as a starter at SS all season.
terrynever said:Funny. I'm averting my eyes from Jeter and trying to focus on the positives of this 2014 team. Maybe he plays well enough to be mediocre and the team wins for other reasons. I'm trying not to define Jeter on what he does this season. His legacy is what it is.

Thanks for the 2014 sig. I really don't know if the scout is wrong or right but it would be a helluva story if an aging Jeter somehow got carried to his sixth WS title. This is the best drama of his career. He's wounded now. If Jeter were on Good Wife, you could just kill him.Trlicek's Whip said:In the ST thread someone linked to the Heyman piece on Jeter. For me, this AL scout's money quote is the bellwether:
I haven't seen any of his swings in ST but those inside-out cracks to RF are his doubles power bread and butter. If he can't get to those pitches or if they aren't snapping off the bat anymore he's toast.
I agree with this assessment.Trlicek's Whip said:In the ST thread someone linked to the Heyman piece on Jeter. For me, this AL scout's money quote is the bellwether:

The answer is a resounding "yes". If Jeter hits .180 and stays healthy he'll still get 600 PAs if he wants them. There is zero chance the Yankees would sit him for poor performance.Homar said:I agree with this assessment.
But what happens if he is toast? What if it's entirely clear by mid-May that he no longer has the range of a three-toed sloth and can no longer perform with the bat, either? What then? Will the MFY continue to play him at SS? He's had an amazing career, and he may well infuriate me one more time by doing things that no one expects. But if he has stayed one year too many, will the Yankees continue to trot him out just because he's Jeter?
terrynever said:If you're staying up nights, worrying about Jeter's final season, take a look at how Cal Ripken Jr. finished his career at age 40. 128 games, 512 PAs, .637 OPS, 70 OPS plus. He had grudgingly moved to third base a few years before. That's the problem Jeter presents the Yankees. If they are in a pennant race trying to hide a defensive liability, shortstop is not the place to do it.
I haven't given up on Jeter having a respectable offensive season but defense is an issue, especially if they contend. Girardi has to lift him in late innings of close games, for starters.
Seems Kelly Johnson doesn't feel certain that Grandpa Fistpump's going to be able to get to anything.terrisus said:Seems Jeter's having some trouble as a "back-up" as well.
In fairness that was Johnson's ball. In fairness, he's probably been told he needs to "cover more ground".Rough Carrigan said:Seems Kelly Johnson doesn't feel certain that Grandpa Fistpump's going to be able to get to anything.
And in reality, once it did, Jeter right on cue missed it as well. Get used to this awkward moment...! There will be quite a bit of teeth clenching in the dugout this year.
